R a in interfered considerably with the pro gress of this the opening match of the Oxford season, and begun on Tuesday last, and the game had to be abandoned early on Saturday from this cause. More than ordinary interest was attached to the trial of the Freshmen from the fact that there were several who had won a deservedly high reputation in Public School crioket, notably Palairet of Repton, Boger and Leveson-Gower of Winchester, and Bathurst of Radley. Llewellyn’s side were lucky enough to go in first on a good wicket, and thanks chiefly to the very good batting of Nelson of Radley were able to reach a respectable total of 232. The bowling honours for Jardine’ s side were shared by Boger and Morgan, the former, who,it will be remembered, was very successful for W in chester last year, appearing to be the more difficult. Nelson got his runs in excellent style. He was batting two hours and a quarter for his 102. Palairet, too, batted in verv promising form. Jardine’ s eleven were unlucky, in having to bat on a wicket affected by the rain of Friday morning, and consequently some allowance is to be made for their poor show. Bathurst, whose all-round form was one of the best features of Public School cricket in 1890, helped by the ground, bowled with great success, getting six batsmen at a cost of only 46 runs. No stand was made until the last wicket, and then Jardine helped Morgan to add 65 runs by some free cricket. Following on in a minority of 93, Jardine’s side were seen to even worse advantage against the bowling of Bathurst and Denny, and when play ceased on Friday night, eightwickets had fallen for 48 runs. Heavy rain on the follow ing morning, as already stated, prevented a resumption on Saturday, and the game had to be left uncompleted. Bathurst, Morgan, Denny, and Boger, as will be seen, came out tho best of the bowlers tried, Morgan also showed up favourably as a batsman. M b . W. D. L l e w e l l y n ’ s S id e . L.' C. V.
