F rom the following list of first-class bat ting and bowling averages in 1891, it will be seen that four professionals, Abel, Gunn, Shrewsbury, and liean, have totalled upwards of a thousand runs during the season. Several others, notably Ulyett, have got very close to the four figures. Among the ama teurs, for a wonder, nobody has scored a thou sand runs, though Messrs. O’Brien, Stoddart, and others have approached very near to it. For a long time it appeared as though Abel was going to make a bold bid for first place, but in the later matches he was not so successful, and his average suffered materially. The marked advance of Bean was quite one of the features of the season. Of the bowlers, Attewell has delivered more overs than any of his rivals, and he has fully upheld his repu tation for precision. J. T. Hearne made such great strides as to be first in the bowling averages, and he came with a bound into the front rank of bowlers. His future doings will be watched with the greatest interest. Lohmann, Sharpe, Mold, Briggs, and Peel, it will be seen have all done well. Mold’s great pace proved specially destructive at times, and his figures were very noteworthy. Consider ing the great amount of work he had to do throughout the season, Lohmann’s perfor mance was one of great merit, particularly when his batting and brilliant fielding are taken into account. He is undoubtedly the best all-round cricketer of the day. Lock wood proved irresistible in the later matches of Surrey, and if he maintains his form of August he will be in quite the foremost rank of bowlers another season. Among the amatours, Messrs. S. M. J. Woods and Ferris did the most work, and have relatively the best figures. BATTING AVERAGES. Times Most in Inns, not out. Runs, an Inns. Aver.
