This is said to be the best record in an American match. F o l l o w in g up the article on “ The Oval” by C. W. Alcock, which formed a feature of the August number, the LudgateMonthly for September contains an article on “ Lords,” illustrated with portraits of the Middlesex Eleven, a sketch of the ground, etc. I n Lancashire cricket in 1891, in first-class matches, Mr. A. C. McLaren has best batting averages, 44.40, having scored 222 in seven innings (two not outs). A. Ward’s record of 678 runs for twenty-three completed innings is the better performance. In bowling Mold and Briggs have taken 201 out of an aggregate of 253 wickets. Of these the former got 112 for 12.81, Briggs 89 for 12.96. O f the first-class Counties which concluded their engagements yesterday, the Somerset shire batting averages are headed by Mr. L. C. H. Palairet, whose aggregate for nineteen innings is 560, and his average 312. while Mr. S. M. J. Woods has taken 72 wickets for just over 17 runs each. Mr. O. G. Radcliffe heads tho Gloucestershire batting with 618 runs and an average of 22 , while in bowling Murch is first with 29 wickets for just over fifteen runs each, though Roberts, whose 48 wickets have cost 1513 each, lias practically the best average. Peel and Wainwright are first in the Yorkshire batting and bowling re spectively.
