32 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. FEB 26, 1891 W .G .’s NEW BOOK. To C ric k e t readers generally, it will hardly be news to learn that the greatest of all cricketers has been for some time past engaged in the compilation of a com prehensive volume on cricket, which is sure to become the standard work on our national game, The bulk of the matter has already seen the light in certain pro vincial and Colonial papers, having occu pied a prominent place in their columns weekly for some months. The publication in book form, however, has given W.G. an opportunity of amplification, as well as of introducing many features which can not fail to add to the interest as well as the attractiveness of the contents. I f the promise of the serial issue is only borne out in the collective publication, “ Forty Years ofCricket ” will indeed form themost valuable contribution to the literature of the game we have as yet had. Its financial success, so far as we can judge, seems to be already assured. The edition de luxe , which is to be issued at, two guineas, has secured as many as 652 subscribers, among whom are H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, and most of the chief supporters as well as leading ex ponents of the game. The book is to consist of 500 pages, and is to have no less than forty-five illustrations, the chief of which will be found in the following list:— Mr. W . G. Grace. Frontispiece. Cricket. Both editions, the edition de luxe as well as the ordinary issue at six shillings, we are informed, are to be ready about the middle of April. The latter has, we understand, been also largely applied for, in fact over a thousand copies have already been ordered, of which two-thirds are from one well - known firm of publishers. In reproducing in the Nov. issue of C r ic k e t an article on “ Some Famous Surrey Cricketers,” we erroneously attributed it to the Surrey Gazette. The sketch appeared in the Surrey Leader.
