ESSEX. Though rain prevented the completion of this return match at Birmingham on Satur day, some good cricket was witnessed on the two previous days. Essex, who won the toss, were at the wiokets all Thursday, scoring 321 for the loss of only nine men. The credit of this excellent performance rested with Messrs. Johnston and Lucas, who put on 168 for the second wicket. The former hit in exoelient style for 86 ,with only one hard chance when he had got 50. Mr. Lucas was batting three hours and a half for his 113, in which was no mistake. Rain kept the wicket easy on Friday, and after getting Essex out for an addition of twenty-two, Warwickshire with several interruptions had scored 150 for the loss of two batsmen when play ceased,Messrs. Bainbridge and Hill putting on 94 for the first wicket. Rain prevented any play on Satur day, so that the game was left in the same position. Mr. L. C. Docker and Richards were not able to play for Warwickshire. Mr. H. G. Owen, b Pallett ................ 18 Mr. A. P. Lucas, C Bryan, b Pallett ...113 Mr. A. S.
