Cricket 1891
AUG. 13, 1891 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 843 YORKSHIRE v. MIDDLESEX. Though they were without the captain, Mr. A. J. Webbe, as well as Messrs. E. A. Nepean and S. W . Scott, the Middlesex eleven were able to win their return match with Yorkshire, fixed for the first part of this week, yesterday at Sheffield, having 47 runs in hand when the game finished. Heavy rains prevented a commencement on Monday and when a start was made on Tuesday the wicket was so soft that the scoring was generally low. Mr. O’Brien gained a great advantage for Middlesex at the outset in winning the toss, and he set his side an excellent example by his brilliant hitting. The best feature of the innings was his partnership with Mr. Hadow, which pro duced 55 for the fifth wicket. Mr. Hadow’ s 34, though not faultless, was a plucky display of cricket, but it was altogether eclipsed by that of Mr. O’Brien. In for over two hours he gave no chance, and on the slow wicket his 72 was an admirable exhibition of .sound and judicious batting with no lack of hitting when oocasion required. At luncheon 142 had been got for six wickets, but the tail found the drying pitch very difficult, and the remaining batsmen only added nine runs. When Yorkshire went in , Hearne and Rawlin bowled with great success, and in spite of some good hitting by Mr. Smith, Mr. Jackson, Harrison, and Moorhouse, the innings was over in under two hours for 117. In half an hour left on Tuesday Middlesex had scored eighteen without the loss of a wicket, and this left them 56 runs to the good. The lead was a very useful one on the treacherous wicket yester day, and no one but Phillips the bowler, who played well, made any stand against Wain- wright’s bowling. His figures, indeed, were remarkable, and, indeed, all the eight wickets which fell to the bowlers were credited to him. Left with a very difficult task of 128 to win, Yorkshire started badly, losing Ulyett and Wardall for nine runs. With the wicket, too, all in their favour, the bowling of Hearne and Rawlin proved altogether too much for the remaining batsmen, and as the innings only realised 79 runs, Middlesex had plenty to spare in the end. Hearne took ton York shire wickets for 94, Rawlin eight for 91 runs. M id d l e s e x . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr.A.E,Stoddart, b Peel... 3 run out ..................... 9 Mr. T. O.
