Cricket 1891

AUG. 6, 1891 CEICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 325 SOMERSETSHIRE v. KENT. The Somersetshire eleven, who a fortnight ago made a great name by a highly creditable victory over Kent at Maidstone, showed that their success was in no way a fluke by the excellent show in the return match at Taunton on Thursday and Friday last. As the wicket dried on tbe first day after the heavy rains of the previous afternoon and morning, the game went on Thursday all in favour of the bowlers. The batsmen were generally seen to such disadvantage that, in the five hours and a half of actual play, twenty-four wickets fell for an aggregate of 224 runs. Martin on the one side and Mr. Woods and Nichols on the other bowled with success, and the brothers Palairet and Nichols for Somersetshire, and Marchant and Fox for Kent, alone did them selves justice with the bat. Kent, who went in second, at one time had scored 70 with only three batsmen out, but the latter part of the innings was a triumph for Mr. Woods and Nichols, and the seven remaining wickets only added 26. Going in again late on Thursday afternoon with a lead of five runs, Somerset shire made a very unpromising com mencement, and when play ceased four of the best batsmen were out for 27 runs. The ground had dried so fast overnight that the game was resumed under quite different con ditions on Friday. Mr. Woods and Nichols hit with great vigour, and before the latter was out the score had been increased by 69 runs, the partnership having produced 82 runs. Mr. Best followed up his success in bowling Nichols in surprising fashion, and as he got Mr. Woods caught at the wicket, and Tyler bowled with the next two balls, be was credited with the rare feat of the hat trick. With eight wickets down for 100 Somersetshire did not seem to be in for a big score. Some brilliant hitting, however, by Mr. Robinson, who scored 55 out of 78 while he was in, improved their position materially, and ultimately the innings closed for 189. Mr. Robinson’s 55 included a hit out of the ground from Martin for six, and he made 27 off two overs of that bowler. Wanting 198 to win Kent made only a moderate start, losing Messrs. Best and Marchant before luncheon time on Friday for 32 runs. On the renewal, though, Mr. Rashleigh gave Alec Heame valuable assistance, and in an hour and twenty minutes 93 were added, of which the amateur had contributed 55 by excellent cricket. With Messrs. Fox and Wilson as well as George Hearne out for 32 more, things began to look more hopeful for Somersetshire. Mr. Bray brooke, however, hit freely, and as the 56 still wanted were got in forty-five minutes Somer setshire were beaten after a plucky fight by four wickets. Alec Hearne played with great care and judgment when the issue was doubt ful, and too much praise can hardly be awarded to him for his invaluable innings. Martin took ten Somersetshire wickets at an average of just over ten runs. S om ersetshire . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. H. T.
