The rain which prevailed over most of Eng land at the latter part of last week did not spare the return match between these Counties, commenced at Manchester on Thursday. On the contrary, it limited the play on the first day to forty-five minutes, and, further, had such a prejudicial effect on the ground as it dried that in losing the toss the Yorkshiremen practically lost the match. Barlow and Ward opened the batting for Lancashire on Thurs day,and during the three-quarters of an hour of actual play scored 32 for the loss of Barlow’ s wicket. On the renewal on Friday the ground was at first easy and the Lancashire bats men were mostly seen to advantage. The honours, however, rested with Ward and Sugg, who fairly took the edge off the York shire bowling. Their partnership for the second wicket realised 118 runs, and as they were together an hour and forty-five minutes it will be seen that they scored at the rate of over a run a minute. Ward was butting two hours and a half, Sugg thirty- five minutes less, and both played free and stylish cricket without a mistake. Smith, Yates, Mr. Crosfield, Mr. Kemble and Watson subsequently, too, gave valuable help, and the result was a very creditable total of 289. Hunter’s wicket-keeping was one of the very best features of Yorkshire’s outing. It will be seen he did not give a bye in Lancashire’s innings. When they took the field the Lanca shire eleven, with the wicket commencing to favour the bowlers, fared well, and with Ulyett, Hall, and Wardall out for only four runs, the outlook for Yorkshire was most unpromising. Peel, however, played with great pluck and judgment when things were going against his side, and with the help of Wainwright, who assisted to add 46, the score had been raised to 97 for five wickets by the end of the second day. On the following morning Peel continued to play admirable cricket. He made 22 of the 53 that were added, and finally carried out his bat for 69, just one-half of the aggregate from the bat. He was in two hours and a half, and there was no fault to be found with his play. In a minority of 138 runs, Yorkshire had to follow on, and with the wicket entirely in favour of the bowlers, their chance of saving the innings was very small. As it was, in spite of some free hitting by Ulyett at the outset, the total was only 41 when the fifth wicket fell, and though Wainwright and Hall made a very plucky stand afterwards, the result was never in doubt. In the end Lancashire won by an innings and 49 runs. Briggs’ bowling was very difficult at the finish. In Yorkshire’ s second innings he took eight wickets, and in the match altogether fourteen wickets at a cost of 122 runs. Mr. A. Sellars who commenced to play for Yorkshire, was taken ill after fielding till iunch-time on the first day, and Mr. Crosfield allowed Ulyett, who captained the Yorkshire eleven in Lord Hawke’s at sence, to substitute Mr. S. R. Jackson, the captain of the Leeds Club. L ancashire . Barlow,b Wainwright 9 A. Ward, c Hunter, b Ulyett .................70 F. H.
