Cricket 1891

AUG. 6, 1891 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 317 HAMPSHIRE v. SUSSEX. The rain, which prevented a commencement of this match at Southampton on Monday afternoon till nearly three o’clock, and caused more than one interruption subsequently, as was only to be expected, affected the pitch so much afterwards thatthe scoring generally was considerably below the average. Though Messrs. Bencraft and Forster, who went in first, put on 32 for Hampshire’s first wicket, except Mr. Hill, who carried out his bat after making 40 of the last 62 runs by free cricket, no one else showed batting above the average. Rain on Monday evening stopped play after Sussex had scored 57 for the loss of three batsmen, of which number Bean had con tributed 24. With the exception of one over rain did not admit of play until past five o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, and in the short time that remained five more batsmen were dismissed for an addition of 45 runs. Yester day the wicket had suffered materially from the heavy rainfall, and the run-getting was affected in a corresponding degree. After getting Sussex out for 129, Hampshire in their turn fared so badly against the bowling of Tate and Humphreys that Mr. Richards alone got double figures, and the whole side were dismissed for 87 runs. Sussex had not a difficult task before them when they went in to get 37 to win, and these were got for the loss of three batsmen. Secoad Innings. b Tate................. The Lancashire County Ground at Man chester was not spared the visitation of rain experienced in most parts of England this week. On the contrary it was perhaps more unfortunate than several others, and on the first two days, at least, the game had not advanced sufficiently to allow of the com pletion of an innings by each side. Winning the tosa gave Essex the chance of batting first, and with several interruptions from rain, they had scored 79 for the loss of five wickets, when a heavy downpour stopped play for the day. A commencement was npt possible till past three o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, and in the time that remained twelve wickets fell for an aggregate of 131 runs. Briggs, who had taken all the five wickets on the first day, was again successful on the second morning, and the last five wickets of Essex only added 39, makiDg a total of 118. Lancashire in their turn fared so badly against the bowling of Pickett and Mead that when the seventh wicket felllthe total was only 51. Frank Ward and Mr. Crosfield, who were still in on Tuesday night after adding 41, played well again yesterday, and the total ultimately reached 141, a result due entirely to their valuable help. Though they were 25 runs to the bad when theybegan their second innings, Essex made such a good start that at one time the score was 61 with only two batsmen out. After this, however, Briggs and Watson bowled with remarkable success, and an addition of only 78 runs was the outcome of the rest of the batting. Lancashire were left with 75 to win, and though Ward was bowled without a run, Suggand Heaton soon knocked off the balance, giving Lancashire the victory by nine wickets. Briggs’ bowling was quite the feature of the game. In the match altogether he took four teen wickets for 125 runs. E S8E X . Fir«t Innings. Mr. H. G.
