Cricket 1891
306 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, JULY 30, 1891 SURREY v. SUSSEX. Rain only admitted of one full day’s cricket in this return match, fixed for the first half of this week at the Oval. Owing to an injury to his arm at Glasgow, Maurice Read was unable to represent Surrey, and Mr. Douglas played instead. On the other side Butt and Mr. C. A. Smith were absent from the Sussex Eleven, and in their absence places were found for the veteran, Phillips, and Parris, of Ringmer, a left handed batsman and right hand medium-pace bowler. Continuous wet prevented the delivery of a ball on Monday, and only a few overs were possible from the same cause yesterday. This time Mr. Shuter was unsuccessful in the toss, but as the wicket was there was little advan tage in going in first. The earlier batsmen of Sussex, indeed, with one exception were not seen to advantage, and with Bean, and Messrs. Newham, both of whom played on, Brann, and Wilson all out for only 30, the outlook was most unpromising. Marlow, who had played with great care and judgment from the first, however, found useful partners in Jesse Hide and Parris, and the total after all reached 123. Marlow, who had gone in first, was not out at the finish. He made 43 of the aggregate, and too much cannot be said in praise of his performance. He watched the ball very carefully throughout, and taking the quality of the bowling and the state of the wicket into account, it was a highly commend able display of batting. When they went in, Surrey, too, found run-getting far from easy, and though Abel and Mr. W. W. Read put on 51 for the third wicket half the side were out with the score' only 101, or 22 behind. A heavy shower caused a suspension of the game while Mr. Key and Lockwood were together, and on the wet wicket the two batsmen made runs so fast that 61 were added in forty minutes, Lockwood, who hit very well, proving to be the highest scorer with 49. Humphreys, whose lobs were nottried till 196 had been got, took the last three wickets in eighteen balls at a cost of only 12 runs. Rain delayed a commencement yesterday till after two o’clock, and then the weather only held up long enough to allow of 6 overs, which realised 11 runs at a cost of Marlow’s; wicket. The game was thus drawn, Sussex wanting 71 to avert an innings defeat with nine wickets to fall. Lockwood’s bowling figures for Surrey were the best of the match. In twenty-five overs he took five wickets at a cost of five runs a piece. S u ssex . First Innings. Marlow, not out Bean, b Lohmann Mr. W . Newham, Lohmann Mr. G. Brann, Sharpe .......... Mr. G. L.
