T o ta l..........i YORKSHIRE v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Following up their decisive victory over Somersetshire at Taunton at the end of last week, the Yorkshire Eleven gained another creditable win at Sheffield on Tuesday, when they defeated Gloucestershire with ten wickets to spare. Mr. F. S. Jackson was still unable to assist Yorkshire, but Peel was fortunately able to resume his place in the Eleven, so that the side had almost its full strength. On the other hand Mr. W . G. Grace, though still so lame as to be obliged to have some one to run, was again able to direct the Gloucestershire team, which except for the absence of Messrs. Townsend and Cranston was thoroughly representative. Successful in the toss for choice of innings, Lord Hawke went in first himself with Hall, and with such success that sixty- three had been made before he was out. Hall’ s defence was once more of the greatest value to his side, and his 60, which occupied him two hours and twenty minutes, was free from a mistake. After his departure, Mr. Smith and 'Wainwright hit so vigorously, with some luck, that 63 were added in a little over half-an-hour. The innings, which had lasted three hours and three-quarters, ulti mately closed for 283, of which Wainwright contributed 68 . Though missed twice after he had made 40, it was altogether a capital exhibition of well-timed and vigorous hitting. Dr, E. M. Grace was nob well enough to commence batting as usual with his brother, and Wainwright and Harrison bowled so successfully that when play ceased on Monday night seven Gloucestershire wickets were down for only 81 runs. The remaining batsmen, too, gave littte help on Tuesday, and as the innings closed for an addition of only ten runs, Gloucestershire had to follow on in a minority of 192. This time, Messrs. E. M. Grace and Radcliffe were the first batsmen and so well did they begin that 75 had been got before the former, who had scored sixteen off Wainwright’s first over, was caught atslip. Just after he had completed his fifty, Mr. Radcliffe was also caught, and as Dr. W. G. Grace and Painter were both dis missed without a run, things looked badly for Gloucestershire saving the innings. Messrs. Pullen and Sainsbury, however, gave the York shire bowlers considerable trouble, and the former scored so fast that the score had been increased in an hour and a quarter by 123 runs when both were dismissed. Mr. Pullen’s 86 was an admirable exhibition of all-round hitting. In his score were as many as sixteen fours, As only eighteen were added by the remaining batsmen, Yorkshire were left with only 31 to win, and these were got with out the loss of a wicket as will be seen. The Leicestershire eleven had an easy win in this match, played at Leicester on Monday and Tuesday, defeating Staffordshire by no less than an innings and 143 runs. The chief honours of Leicestershire’s big total of 423, the highest the County has yet made, rested with Mr. De Trafford, Holland, and Goadby, who were responsible for 267 of the number. Mr. De Trafford made no mistake till he had got 70, and Holland’s 68 were obtained without achance. Pougher took eight Staffordshire wickets for 121, and Mr. Goadby seven in their second innings for 51 runs. L e ic e st e r s h ir e .
