Cricket 1891

JULY 23 1891 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME; 279 M,C.C. & GROUND v. DERBYSHIRE. Though they had all the worst of the early part of this game, commenced at Lord’s, on Thursday, the Derbyshire eleven, who were without Messrs. Wright and Evershed, played up so pluckily that they were able to beat a moderate team of M.C.O. & Ground early on Friday with four wickets to spare. After dis missing M.C.C. for 177 runs Derbyshiremadea peculiar as well as inauspicious commence ment, the first four batsmen, W. Sugg, Bag shaw, Chatterton, and Storer being all out lbw, for 49. When the ninth wicket fell, 8 runs were still wanted to save the follow-on, but these and more were got by Mr. Walker and Porter, who added 37 before the innings closed. Though they had a useful lead of 50 runs whentheywent inagain, M.C.C.’sbatting was of averymediocre character, and, with Mr. Littlewood absent, the sidewere out with the fall of the ninthwicket at 97. Wanting 148 to win, Derbyshire commenced inverypromising style, W. Sugg and Bagshaw putting on 78 in fifty minutes before the latter was bowled. Bad fielding subsequently helped Derbyshire considerably, and Thorpe, who went in third wicket down and made the hit which gave Derbyshire the victory, had more than one life. Still the County eleven deserve great credit for the pluck |with which they played and won an uphill game. M.C.C. &G. Seeond Innings. b W alker..........20 b Porter ..........1G First Innings. Mr. J.
