Total , 66 LANCASHIRE v. LEICESTERSHIRE. The prevalent rain of late prevented the commencement of this match at Manchester, onMonday, until after the luncheon interval. Consequently the day’s play was confined to three hours and forty minutes, and as the ground helped the bowlers, so much progress was made that seventeen wickets fell. Though Lancashire won the toss they found it extremely difficult to score off Pougher and Woodcock, who bowled admirably. In fact, with the exception of Barlow, who was in nearly two hours for 29, and Mr. Hornby and Baker, nobody offered much resistance. The total of the innings, indeed, was only 97, Woodcock, who bowled very fast, coming out with the fine record of seven wickets for 44 runs. When they went in, the Leicestershire batsmen in their turn found Moldverydifficult as thewicketwas, andexcept Mr. De Trafford, who made 29 in thirty-three minutes with characteristic freedom, no one made any stand. On Monday night sevenmen were out for 52, and as on the following day only seven were added, the innings closed for 59. Briggs’ bowling met with remarkable success, and on the second morning he sent down twenty-two balls for one run and three wickets. As there was little sunshine on Tuesday, the ground had greatly improved for Lancashire’s second innings, which was chiefly noticeable for a fine display by Albert Ward. Together with Barlow he put on 83 for the first wicket. Though he should have been caught when he had made 88, his innings, with this exception, was worthy of the highest praise He played with great freedom and confidence, and as he made 105 out of 130 in two hours and ten minutes, it will be seen he scored with much greater freedom than usual. Smith took an hour to make ten, but as a contrast Briggs and Yates added 39 in twenty-five minutes, while Yates and his captain put on 49 more in thirty-five minutes. Lancashire’s excellent total of 270 occupied them exactly four hours, and leftLeicestershire the hopeless task of getting 309. Late in the day the sun shone out and made matters difficult for the visitors, who in three-quarters of an hour lost five of their best batsmen for 39. Yesterday, thanks to the good cricket of Tomlin, Mr, Pearson,Holland, and Finney, a slightly better showwas made, but as the total was only increased by 62, Lancashire were left with a decisive victory by 207 runs. Briggs took six wickets for 49 runs, making his record for the match nine wickets for 50. L an cash ire . First Innings. A.
