Cricket 1891
254 CEICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OP THE GAME. JULY 9, 1891 GENTLEMEN v. PLAYERS. T h e L o rd ’ s M a t c h . Though the original selection of theAmateur elevens showedveryslight difference in the two matches, still, therewere three changes in the team which represented the Gentlemen at Lord’s from that which did duty at the Oval. Instead of Messrs. Dixon, Douglas, and Jackson, places were found for Messrs. Steel, Streatfeild, and Nepean, while the Players, too, also showed two alterations in the sub- stitution of Attewell and Sherwin for Briggs and Hunter. The ground even at the outset onMondaywas still slowfrom the recent rains, and the Players, who again wonthe toss, did not show to any great advantage. Messrs. Woods and Grace bowled so well, indeed, that no one but Shrewsbury stayed any timo, and his batting for the first time this season was quite up to his best standard. A heavy storm stopped play at a quarter to four o’clock, and then the telegraph showed as the result of three hours’cricket 118 runs, of which Shrewsbury, who was not out,had contributed 58. On Tuesday, the weather was even more unfavourable, and indeed the rain . only allowed forty minutes’ play. In this time seventeen runs were added to the Players’ total for ^the loss of one more batsman (Atte well), who was run out by a very fine piece of fieldingbyMr. Woods atmid-off. Shrewsbury had meanwhile increased his score by nine runs, being credited with 67 of the 135 made for the eight wickets down. Though the ground was still very heavy from the down pour of Tuesday, play was resumed before noon yesterday, and 27 runs were added be fore the innings cameto an end. Shrewsbury was still in when the tenth wicket fell, having seen the whole side out. As will be seen he scored81, or more than one half the runs got from the bat, andhis marked success after his failures this year will give universal satis faction. He was inaltogether four hours and a quarter, and, with the exception of an easy chance to cover-point from Mr. Streatfeild’s bowling, there was nothing like a fault to be instanced in depreciation of a masterly dis play of batting. Just before one o’clock the Gentlemen commenced their innings with Messrs. Grace and Stoddart, and when rain finally stopped the game soon after three o’clock, 89 runs had been got for the loss of five of the best batsmen on the side. A decision to give up further play was not arrived at until nearly half past four o’clock, and soon after the game had been abandoned a severethunder-storm burst over the ground. Universal regret will befelt at the unfortunate termination of the most important match of the year, and the premature end caused no small disappointment to a considerable num ber whoweremaking their way to the ground.
