Cricket 1891

JUNE 25, 1891 CRICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME; 2 0 8 — j LANCASHIRE v. OXFORD UNIVERSITY. Little more than two days* play sufficed to finish off this match, begun at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Thursday last, and the Dark Blues had to put up with a decisive defeat by an innings and 54 runs. The cricket was never at any period very interesting, and the result of the match was scarcely ever in doubt. Though Messrs. Llewelyn and Watson, who went in first, made a fairly good start for Oxford, the Oxford batsmen did not, on the whole, relish Mold’s fast bowling, and the only stand was by Messrs. Wilson and Jardine, who added 48 runs. After this things again went badly with them, and no one except Mr. Boger, who carried his bat out for 41, offered any serious resistance. The total of the Oxford innings realised 162, Mold having secured six wickets at an average cost of 12 runs each. A much better display was given by Lancashire, though on Thursday night, with half their wickets down for 115, they did not appear to hold any great advantage. On Friday, however, with tne wicket ratner im proving than otherwise, the Oxford bowling was very severely punished, and though the chief honours were borne off by Barlow and Baker, Messrs. Hornby, Kemble, and Yates towards the close hit freely. Barlow, who played with characteristio steadiness, and in quite his old form, for 88, stayed in altogether four hours. Baker, who had two lives, was batting just over two hours for his 93, and his hitting proved an effective foil to Barlow’s defence. Thus the handsome total of 338 was reached, the latter half of the eleven having played up finely. In arrears of 176, the Oxonians started their second essay on Friday afternoon, and at the drawing of stumps had by slow cricket compiled 105 for the best six batsmen. All interest had now gone out of the match, and a little over half an hour on Saturday morning sufficed to dispose of the four remaining wickets. Mr. Wilson again displayed good cricket for 30, and Mr. Llewelyn scored 32 ; otherwise little can be said in praise of the Oxford batting. A. Smith was this time the successful bowler for the County, and his five wickets were got for just over nine runs a-piece. Mr. E. Smith was absent from the Oxford eleven, and the loss of his all-round cricket handicapped the side heavily. On the other hand, Lancashire lacked the bowling of Watson, who has not as yet recovered from the strain be suffered in the Surrey match. T he U n iv er sity . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. H. After a very even game lasting well into the third day the Yorkshire eleven lost this match, begun on the ground of the Liverpool Club, by 54 runs. The chief features were the bat ting of Messrs. A. G. Steel and Bretherton for Liverpool, and of Hall and Ulyett for Yorkshire. In the second innings of the County, Smith, who is engaged with the Birkenhead Park Club, did a fine performance with the ball. He took seven of the ten wickets at a cost of only 59 runs.
