LANCASHIRE. The Lancashire eleven gained their first victory of the season, in a first-class County match at Bradford yesterday, when they de feated Yorkshire with eight wickets to spare. After recent failures it was hardly a surprise to find some Colts in the Yorkshire eleven, and while Tunnioliffe and Wardle were again tried, a place was found for J. R. Bulmer, of Guisbro’, a medium pace bowler. Lanca shire, who were still without Watson, as well as Messrs. A.G. Steel and A.C. McLaren, were fortunate enough to win the toss, and of course took the innings. Still the start was a most unpromising one, and although Sugg hit with his wonted freedom, with half the wickets down for 67, things looked anything but encouraging for their side. The later batsmen, however, fully atoned for the early failures. Mr. Crosfield, Briggs, Yates, and Mold, indeed, all scored freely, and the last-named helped to add 65 for the last wicket. Mr. Crosfield’s batting though was the feature of the innings. Though missed twice badly, the first time when he had got 29, the seoond when he had made 37, he made no mistake afterwards, and altogether his play was worthy of high praise, combining sound defenoe with plenty of hit. On Monday night Ulyett and Hall had made 51 without the loss of a wicket for Yorkshire, and there seemed every chance of an even game on the first innings. As it was, however, excepting Ulyett and Wardle, the Colt, who carried out his bat for a very careful innings of 29, no one offered much opposition to the bowling of Briggs, Mold and Baker, and on Tuesday morning the ten wiokets were dismissed for an addition of 180 runs. Following on in a minority of 97 runs, Wardle and Hall made a promising start for Yorkshire, and the score was 86 before the former was caught for a thoroughly well-played 61,with only one hard chance when he had made 19. With the exception however of the unwearying defenco of Hall, who was batting two hours and a half for his 48, and was not dismissed till the score had reached 144, there was no other note worthy feature in the innings. The end was indeed very disappointing, as the last nine wiokets only added 82 runs, a result due to the effective bowling of Briggs and Mold, the former of whom took eleven wickets in the matoh. Yesterday Lancashire were left with 72 runs to win, and as thanks mainly to the good cricket of Barlow, these were got for the loss of two batsmen, Lancashire in the end were left with an easy viotory by eight wickets.
