Cricket 1891

MAY 28, 1891 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 145 LORD SHEFFIELD’S ELEVEN y. M.C.C. AND GROUND. Though rain not only delayed the com mencement of this match at Sheffield Park until after luncheon on Monday, but caused two interruptions on the following morning, the game was so far advanced as to be very nearly finished within the limit of the two days for which it was arranged. Mr. W. G. Grace had collected a strong side to re present the Club, and on paper it looked to have an excellent chance. The weather only admitted of two hours and twenty minutes, play on Monday, and this time was ocoupied with the completion of an innings by M.C.C. Lohmann and Wright, the latter of whom played in consequence of Briggs’ illness, as sisted by the ground were too difficult for any lengthy stand. Mr. O’ Brien proved to be the highest scorer, but the best cricket was shown on the fall of the seventh wickec by the two Australians, Messrs. Pope and Ferris, the former of whom was in an hour and a quarter for an extremely well played score of 27. When Lord She ffield’s Eleven went in on Tueslay morning runs came at a good pace on the wet wicket, and the earlier batsmen did so well that at luncheon time the telegraph showed 107 with only two wickets down. Mr. Newham, who was .not out 63 at the interval, on the resumption saw Marlow go without scoring, and was then caught^at mid-off him self. lie had contributed 77 out of 136, and during his stay of two hours at the wickets there was not a real mistake to be urged to his disadvan'age. Lohmann hit vigorously, but none of the later batsmen did anything, and the innings closed for 172, the last six wickets having only added 36 runs. Though ihey were 63 runs to the bad with only an hoar and a half left for play, there seemed to be but a slight chance of a defeat for M.C.C. As it happened, however, Wright and Loh- macn bowled with even greater success than on the previous day, and Lord Sheffield’s Eleven after all very nearly won. In spite of som) free hitting by Mr. O’Brien the score was r>nly 39 when the fifth wicket fell, and but for the steadiness of Mr. Pope at the crisis M.C.C. would have been beaten. As it was Attewell, the last man, was in when time was up and the game drawn, Marylebone having just reached their opponents’ score with only one wicket in hand. Wright and Lohmann i were unchanged throughout for Lord Sheffield’s Eleven, and both made full use of their opportunities. The former, though, had much the better figures, and his summary for the match showed ten wickets for an average of under six runs. M.C.C. First Innings. Dr. W. G. Grace, b Wright 19 Mr. A. J.
