MAT 21, 1891 C R IC K E T : ~ A W E E K L Y RECORD OP T H E GAME . 127 SUSSEX v. HANTS. W ith Messrs. Lacey, Wynyard, and H. W . Forster, as well as Roberts, all away, Hamp shire had only a poor eleven to meet Sussex at Brighton on Monday. Though Sussex were not so well represented as they might have been with the Hides away, they still had the advantage at every point, and were able to claim an easy victory. Rain prevented a commencement on Monday until after lunch, and then Hampshire made such a moderate show that the whole side were dismissed in just over two hours for 99 runs. The only feature in the innings was furnished by Mr. Bencraft, who went in first and was not out at the finish, having scored 67 of 96 from the bat. Sussex, on the other hand, made a fairly good start, and at the end of the first day had headed their opponents' total by 8 runs, with only four batsmen out. Their success was mainly due to the good batting of Mr. Newham, who made 61 of the aggregate of 107 without a chance, and was still not out. On Tuesday, however, Soar and Baldwin, helped by the state of the ground, proved very effec tive, and Sussex only added 60, the last three batsmen all failing to score. In a minority of 68 Hampshire fared worse than in their first innings, and though three batsmen got double figures the total only reached 60. This small score was the result chiefly of some remarkable bowling by Tate. He took nine of the ten wickets at a cost of only 24 runs. Sussex had at the finish only three to get to win,and as W. Quaife and Humphreys obtained these, Hamp shire were beaten by ten wickets. H ampshire . First Innings. Mr. A. Russell, b Smith ... 7 Mr. R.
