Cricket 1890

APRIL 24, 1890. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 77 Suoh are some of the troubles and miseries of minor cricket, and the number could be largely increased. No doubt annoyances of a like nature are found in county clubs, but there they will be modified by the authority of the captain, the greater self-respect of the players, and the pressure of public opinion. Would that such influence could be brought to bear powerfully on the hundreds who desecrate the noble game by malice and grumbling, and whose sole desire seems to be playing to suit their own convenience and to indulge their vanity. Another May term has dawned upon us, and after the result of the boat race, we are anxiously considering what consolation our cricket prospects have to offer. Believing that many of your readers are interested in University cricket, I therefore put you in possession of what information I have been able to gather. Firstly, then, we expect Woods to turn out a rattling captain; his keenness is bound to help on the team. He will be supported by H. J. Mordaunt, R. C. Gosling, G. Macgregor, E. R. de Little, and C. P. Foley, while F. G. J, Ford, last year’s skipper, is almost a certainty also. E. Crawley is still qualified, but is hardly likely to play, so, in all proba bility, we shall have places to fill up. For these four places the competition promises to be very keen. The Seniors are about an average lot, G. H. Cotterill, F. E. Woodhead, R. A. A. Beresford, A. Ross, R. O. Crawford, S. H. Barber, W. Martin Scott and W. J. Powell being the pick. Ross and Beresford, the heroes of last year’s Freshmen’s match, should both improve, though the Selwyn man does not always play with a straight bat, and Ross’ play was last year too tame to allow him to shine in anything beyond college matches. Barber’s fast bowling, too, has been very suc cessful on the King’s ground, andwe still have faith in Woodhead. But although the Seniors are not to be despised, the Freshmen promise to be unusually good. School form is pro verbially uncertain, but at the least we feel sure of having a much better lot than the men who appeared as freshmen last year. On school form the best of this year’s men should be F. S. Jackson, R. B. Hoare, and C. P. Wills, of Harrow; Hon. R. A. Ward, H. R. Bromley-Davenport, W. G. Crum, H. W. Studd, and H. F. Wright, of Eton : A. J. L. Hill, of Marlborough; E. C. Streatfield, of Charterhouse; N. C. Cooper, of Brighton; and D. L. A. Jephson, who is not unknown at the Oval. If school form counts for anything, some of these men are bound to turn out well. Of Jackson it is unnecessary to speak, while Hoare seems by no means likely to turn out the first man who, after scoring a century in the Eton and Harrow match, has afterwards failed to make his mark in important matches. Streatfield’s all-round record when he cap tained the Charterhouse XI. in 1888 was the subject of a good deal of favourable comment, while Hill’s b a ttiD g and bowling were last year of the greatest use to Marlborough. It is too early to prophesy, but with seven of the best of last year’s eleven, and plenty of most promising material for the few extra places, I trust that our hopes of,a successful seasonmay be consideredneitherpresumptuous nor unfounded.
