Cricket 1890
APRIL 24, 1890, CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 78 as far as one can judge, the help of his bowling will be very opportune. Mr. Smith’s latest performance to hand by the African mail shows conclusively that the reports o f his exceptionally good bowling form are well founded. On the 22nd of March the opposition clubs at the Band— to wit, the Wanderers and Nondescripts, met to try conclusions. scorer with 91 out of 256 for seven wickets. ORiCKET-readers, too, will be glad to hear that Mr. Bowden, who was apparently this winter for a time off colour, has just latterly been giving the Transvaal cricketers a taste o f his real form. Only two days after the match last mentioned he did another excellent performance for the Johannesburg by East Melbourne against St. Kilda, in the match begun #n the former's ground on February 22 and ending on March 8, is worthy of special notice, if only be cause it is, with one exception, the best record in the annals of club cricket in Australia. The very best performance of the kind is East Melbourne’s 742 against Tasmania in 1879, and this total was M r . WILLIAM LLOYD MURDOCH. The result was an easy victory for the former, and entirely through the joint efforts o f the firm, who got all the ten wickets o f the Wanderers, Smith seven for 29 and Bowden three for 13 runs. T h e junior member, M .P., in fact, had, though, the best record in all-round cricket, as he was, in addition, the top Wanderers. On this latter occasion he was responsible for 101 of a total o f 180 for three wickets. The match was note worthy, in addition, for another not very common feat on the other side. Wege, of Kimberley, carried his bat through the innings of the Standard Bank, scoring 60 out of 110.
