Cricket 1890

APRIL 24, 1890. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 69 “ bowled Binns,” “ bowled Binns,” “ bowled Binns,” till the last wicket fell at half-past five for 70. Consequently “ West ” had to follow on. Binns, although desperately tired, bowled oc casionally, and managed to get rid ofseveral men who were becoming dangerous. At length the score stood at 72 for seven wickets, and the clock pointed towards seven. “ Stumps drawn after the next over ” was the order of the day. “ Y ou’d better take the last over,” said the captain, tossing the ball to Binns. This was rather a fortunate move, as Binns clean bowled the last three men in four balls. “ East” had won the match by an innings and a run ! Binns was chaired, and cheered, and grasped by the hand, and slapped on the back, and generally maltreated until he felt more dead than alive. “ Did you plaj' out time ? ” he asked the captain, an hour or two later. 1 “ Play out time ? I should think we did ! Why, we made 155 without losing a wicket after you’d gone—never had such a gay time in m y life. All the scratch lot went on to bowl one after another, in alphabetical order, I think. So you see I was quite right when I said they were a set of crocks. And I don’t believe Mr. Villiers will ever find out about it, unless someone goes and tells him .” “ That’s just what I ’m going to do,” said Binns, quietly. Mr. Villiers seems to have been a man o f uncertain temper. At any rate, when he heard how Binns had contrived to play two games simultaneously, he didn’t storm nor rave, nor give him notice on the spot. On the contrary, he laughed loudly, and said, “ Binns, I congratulate you. You are a clever man. You have got over ME. Come and have a cigar.” And Binns came. I ZIN G A R I. F ix tu r e s fo r 1830.
