Cricket 1890
APRIL 24, 1890. CRICKET: A WEEKLY BECORD OF THE GAME. 67 M E LBOU RN E C LU B v. F IF T E E N OF QU EEN SLAND . The same bad luck which had attended the Queensland players in their match against New South Wales, at Sydney, a few days before, followed them when their tim e came to meet eleven of the Melbourne Club on March 10. The wicket at the first was easy, but cut up badly towards the end of the innings, and the tail made, in consequence, only a poor show. Coningham, who showed such excellent all-round cricket at Sydney, was again very successful with the bat. W ith the exception of Hutton, who, it is said, is going to stay in Sydney, no one else could do anything against the bowling of M cLeod, Phillips and Dickson, and the pair were responsible for 73 out of 110 from the bat, Dickson perform ed w ith great success on the later batsmen. H is six wickets only cost 10 runs. M cLeod, who had bowled well for the club, was also the chief scorer. The match was drawn. Q ueensland XV. First Innings. The m atch between these Clubs at South Melbourne, concluded on March 8, produced the second highest innings made in a Club m atch of any importance in Australia. W hen stumps were drawn at the end of the second Saturday (March 1), South Melbourne had made 595 for eight wickets, and this was increased to 700 before the last wicket fell. Trott made 161 early in the innings, but the latter part was even m ore noteworthy. Graham, a young player just drafted into the first eleven, and Rains put on no less than 220 for the ninth wicket, and the form er was not out at the finish, having scored 161 by very free cricket. In his figures were one 5, and twenty-five 4’s. “ F elix,” of the Australasian newspaper, thinks that Graham is likely to make a name as a batsman, as he bats soundly and vigorously and is at hom e all round the wicket.
