Cricket 1890

CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. SEPT. 25, 1890. sudden death last Monday. Some few years ago by his influence and energy he resuscitated the Clapton Club, one of the oldest institutions of the kind in the neighbourhood of London, and though for a time without a home, the success ful revival of the Club was in a great measure due to his untiring and unselfish labours. A good cricketer in his day, George Head’s devotion to the game never slackened, and as a member of the Marylebone as well as the Surrey County Clubs, he remained in touch with the better class of cricket to the last. It was my good fortune to be actively associated with him on the cricket field more years ago than I care to mention, and I treasure his memory as that of not only a straightforward and real sportsman, but of one who was loyal and true in every relation of life. R ich ard P il l in g , the Lancashire wicket-keeper, who has not been able to play this season, leaves England in the Orient steamer “ Ormuz ” to-morrow for Australia, in the hope that the voyage and winter absence from England will restore him to health. C r ic k e t readers of all classes will heartily hope that the trip will have the desired effect, and that we shall again have the opportunity of seeing the prince of English wicket keepers thoroughly at his best. Pilling, it is stated, will have the company of the first detachment of the Australian team homeward bound in the “ Ormuz.” J. W a lk e r ’s XI. S T R E A TH AM v. G. A .
