On the 20th July, a team consisting prin cipally of Englishmen, who despite the distance and expense continue to read C r ic k e t regularly, made the journey £from the little backwoods village of Aspdin to play Bracebridge on the latter’s ground. The start from Aspdin was made at 2 45 a m. in a waggon drawn by oxen, and after a journey of some hours over horribly bad roads (during which the language would have been more forcible than polite, had it not been for the presence of the local parson) the procession arrived at their destination, and at once adjourned to the ground. The toss was won by the visitors’ captain, who decided to put his opponents in to bat first. As the men of Aspdin could only muster two pairs of cricket-boots between them, these were generously given up by their owners to the bowlers, with good results, as the subjoined score will shfew. For the visiting team Mr. Eiloart played a good innings of 51. A spdin . A. Eiloart, b David son ........ . ..........51 E. H. Waterhouse, b T o p p ........................ 3 M. A. W o o d w a r d (Shanghai).—Under the new rule which allows a side to declare its innings ended at any time, would the two not-out men be considered to have retired and so have played a completed innings, or should their innings be considered a not-out one when making up the averages at the end of the season ? [The not outs do not count as completed innings, but simply as not-outs in calculating averages.] B a tsm a n .— Can you be out lbw if you first hit the ball with your finger and then roll on your leg? Also, which umpire’s decision ought to be taken in the case of hitting a ball to leg (the dispute being whether it hit the ground first before being caught), the umpire standing at leg or umpire at bowler’s end ? [The ball having been first played and hitting the leg after cannot be out lbw. The umpire from bowler’s end decides the catch.] R. H . H a y -C h a p m a n (Avenue Farm, Grenfell. N.W.T., Canada).—You can certainly deliver the ball behind the bowling crease if you like. W a k e f ie l d —1. If striker (having substitute to run for him) hit the ball, and he and his substi tute run to opposite ends, also other batsman makes good the ground at opposite end,is striker out if wicket be put down at the end he has left. [Yes. Out.] 2. If umpire gives decision contrary to rules, is captain justified in refusing to allow a man to leave his wicket. [No. De cision is final ] 3. If bowler bowl a no-ball, and one or more runs be scored from it, has the bowler another ball to deliver in its place V [Yes.] _________________________ NORWOOD PARK.
