Cricket 1890

SEPT. i, 1890. CRICKED: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME; 8 7 1 too, let out vigorously, and 71 runa were put on while he waa in with Hewett. The latter had the bad luck just to m iss hia hundred by one run. H e was only in tw o hours for hia score of 99, and there was but one fault early in the innings to detract from a brilliant exhibi tion of free batting. Left w ith 219 to win, in spite of the excellent cricket of W ebbe and Hadow, a moderate start was'made by I Z,, and on Friday night five of the best batsmen were out for 77. On Saturday morning, too, the end quickly came, and the dismissal of the rem aining wickets for 30 left the Gentlemen winners by 93 runs. In the match W oods got twelve wiokets for 97 runs. M ordaunt’s bowling at the end of the second innings of the Gentlemen was, it will be seen, remark ably suocessful. Q tsntlbmen op E ngland , First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. A. E. YORKSHIRE v. M.C.C. Rain interfered considerably with the seoond match of the Scarborough Festival, begun on Monday, and, as a result, the game was left unfinished yesterday evening. Mary lebone was represented by a strong lot of amateurs, and, as there were twelve a-side, it was arranged that they should all bat while only eleven fielded. Lord Hawke, though he won tbe toss, sent Marylebone in, under the impression that the wicket would dry suf ficiently in time for the county to get the ad vantage when their turn came to bat. Six batsmen of M.C.C., too, were dismissed for 49, but some fine hitting by Messrs. Hadow, O’Brien, and Woods <manged the aspect of the game completely, and the last four wiokets added 159 runs. Mr. Hadow’s 69 was a par ticularly fine display of crioket. He played all the bowling after a time with confidence, and among his hits were one out of the ground for 6. Owing to rain Yorkshire did not go in till Tuesday morning, and they, too, began so badly that when the sixth wioket fell the score wae only 61. The later batsmen, though, like those of M.C.C. played up with great pluck, and the tail lent such valuable assist ance that 124 runs were added before the tenth wicket fell. As on the previous day, rain stopped play on the completion of an innings, and M.C.C. had to go in yesterday for the second time with a lead of 23. As on the first day too, the start was disastrous, and this time fivo wickets were down for 20 runs. As before, though, Mr. Hadow came to the rescue with some fine hitting, and Mr. Ver non helped him so well that the innings was closed just after one o’clook with both bats men in. Yorkshire had less than two hours for batting when they went in, and when play ceased they had made 81 of the 151 wanted to win at a cost of three wickets. Hall con tributed 50 of the 81 got, and as these figures will prove, his batting showed more freedom than i3 generally the case. M.C.C. *3econd Innings. First Innings. Mr. C. I.
