Cricket 1890

AUG. 2 a, 1890, CRICKET: A WEEKLY KECORD OP THE GAME. 861 These are of Course, I may add, in addition to the performances of W. G. in 1876, of W. W. Read in 1887, and Abel just recently, to which I alluded last week. In reference to W. G .’s record in 1871 a correspondent points out that he every nearly scored fou r consecutive innings of 100, as in the match between M.C.C. &G. and Yorkshire, commenced on May 22, his score in the second innings was 98. In 1874 Jupp scored 154 and 144 against Sussex, in successive matches fo r Sw rey and in consecutive innings, but a fortnight elapsed between the two fixtures, so that in all probability some im portant contest intervened. MR, K. 7, KEY. “ I w as much interested,” writes the Rev. Richaxd Chichester, “ to read your note on Mr. Streatfeild in last week’s 1Pavilion Gossip.’ It certainly is a re markable performance to bowl a wicket with the first ball delivered in an inter county match, but I fancy Mr. J. J. Parfitt some ten years ago was even more successful, as, unless my memory M. HEAD. In commenting on Abel’s two hundreds in consecutive matches just lately for Surrey, I referred to the two cases of a similar kind which occurred to me in the hurry of writing. I felt sure that the Grand Old Man himself must have had several other records, and the following communication from Mr. Herbert T. Troughton, an old follower of the game and L E A D I N G S U R R E Y C R I C K E T E R S . Troughton says] the writer, in drawing attention to A bel’s two centuries, v. Middlesex and Lancashire respec tively, reminds his readers of the Cham pion’s wonderful performance in 1876, and of M r. W . W . Bead’s two great innings in 1887. M ay I be allowed to m ention that in 1870 W . G. Grace twice scored tw o centuries in tw o con secutive innings in tw o matches. W hile in 1871, 1872, and in 1873, he thrice secured the century in consecutive innings. B ut you will find on the enclosed a list of W . G.’s consec utive centuries m ade in consecutive matches, in which, if yon could find room for them , m any of your readers would take great inter est. I have written them out from m em orj, but am certain they are correctly stated as to dates, etc. 1870. July 16.— Oval, Gentlemen v. Players. b A .
