Cricket 1890
S 4 6 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. AUG. fil, 1890. T h e following has been sent me anony mously. I have reason to believe, though, that the effusion emanates from a source not altogether unconnected with Colney Hatch:— ON THE D E F E A T OF N O T T S B Y S U R R E Y , A ug. 4, 5, 6. The K ey to the whole position was the bowling, though the batting was good, and those who wish to Read a full report, let M. Read it in C rick e t. T he team was worthy of success, being all round an Abel one. The bow ling was very Sharpe, and when the Notts captain seemed getting set, Lohmann! a bailer settled him. L ock -wood appear to be the com ing man in batting, and no cricket can be played without a Shuter. It Wood be invidious to draw distinctions, but the wicket- keeping was superb. The Roller gave a good pitch, and as for Nottingham , Surrey will Jlenderson (end her sun) h ’m 1 for this year. T h e following will show the positions of the eight leading Counties this year, up to date. Played. Won. Lost. Dwn. Points. Aver. I t may be of interest to give a list of the few important county matches still remaining for decision. Aug. 21 at Oval, Surrey v. Yorkshire, „ Beckenham, Kent v. Lancashire. 25 Maidstone, Kent v Yorkshire. 28 Oval, Surrey v. Kent. „ Manchester, Lancashire v. Notts. „ Brighton, Sussex v. Yorkshire. Mr. G. P. G r e e n , of Beresford House, Great Malvern, writes as follows anent a match between the Australians and an eleven representing the minor Counties. Is it too late to arrange a m atch between our Colonial visitors and an eleven selected from the counties of the second class ? I have hoped to see this advocated by a more able pen, but the season is far advanced, and if anything be done it must be done quickly. T he match should be a m ost interesting one, and I am by no means certain our visitors would have the best of it. Those of us who have watched the admirable bowling of the Somerset and W arwick men would be curious to see how far it would succeed when opposed to batsmen of the first class, and I am sure the m ost successful batsmen of the same grade would be nothing loth to try their skill against Ferris and Turner. T h e publication of the Gloucestershire averages will give general satisfaction, if only that they show the Grand Old,Man to be still in the first place amongst the batsmen. When it is remembered th«* in the early part of the season he wsrt not able to do himself full justice owir|| to an injury to his knee, his figures a*e of the greater merit. An average of over thirty-six for twenty-three completed inn ings would be exceptional for a cricketer in the prime of his career, but for aveteran who has had over a quarter of a century of hard work it is wonderful. W. G. is a national institution, and this renewed proof of his extraordinary vitality will cause national gratification. Mention of Gloucestershire cricket this year would be incomplete, too, without prominent notice of Woofs continuous success since he joined the team. He was only able to take part in the last seven matches, but in these he was able to obtain fifty- five wickets at a cost of a fraction over thirteen runs a-piece.
