Sm ith, theCaptain, who was playing against the Australians at Leyton, left Sussex weaker than ever for its return m atch with Hampshire at Southampton at the end of last week. Though Hampshire, too, had not quite its full strength, it was strong enough to have the best of the game, and ultimately to w in with eight wickets to spare. Their victory was due in a great measure to the excellent all-round cricket of Mr. Forster. In addition to taking seven wickets for 55 runs, he carried out his bat for 57 in the second innings, Mr. W ynyard and he getting the last 50 runs required by Hampshire to win in fiLe style. H eavy rain prevented a commencement of the return match between these counties at Bradford on Monday, and as owing to the same cause no play was possible yesterday, there was no ohance of completing the game. As it was, tw enty-six wickets fell for an aggregate of 300 runs, and M iddlesex were very nearly being beaten, having 38 to get to avoid an innings defeat with only four wickets to fall. Though Middlesex won the toss they found the wicket m uch more favourable for the bowlers than was expected, and Peel and W ainwright were so successful that in an hour and twenty minutes the innings was over for 60 runs. Yorkshire, too, at the outset seemed in for only a small score, as H all and Mr. Sm ith were dism issed in succession w ith out a run, and at twelve U lyett was caught. Lord Hawke’s brilliant hitting, however, changed the whole appearance of the game. Playing with the greatest confidence he scored freely from all the M iddlesex bowlers, and when he was out the ninth wicket, he had got 74 of 141. H e made two big hits over the football pavilion for six, and there was nothing like a fault during the tw o hours and a quarter he was in. Just at the finish, too, Brown was seen to great advantage, and his 81 not out was a thorou ghly well-played innings. Going in a second tim e 109 runs to the bad, M iddlesex fared even worse than before, losing both Messrs. W ebbe and Stoddart w ith out a run. Mr. O’Brien, though, hit freely for his 24, and Rawlin and Mr. Ford went in for the same game with considerable success, adding 39 in the last half hour. W hen play ceased on Tuesday night the score was 71 for six wickets, and in that state the game had to be left, as previously stated. M iddlesex . Second Innings. First Innings. Mr. A. J.
