N EW SOU TH W A L E S . The m atch between these Colonies, begun on the ground of the M elbourne C.C. on D ecem ber 26, was of special interest, as each had w on twenty of the forty-two previously played. Owing to a sprained ankle, T. Horan was unable to play for Victoria, and, as S. P. Jones was prevented from representing N ew South W ales, J. D. Edwards and A . C. K . M ’K enzie were introduced into the re spective team s. Blackham , having won the toss, sent in B ruce and Edwards to face the bow ling of Turner and Ferris. Edwards and T rott were both caught at the w icket for a couple, but B ruce and Barrett made matters m ore lively, and 61 were added before the lorm er was well caught for a good inning3 of 61. Blackham helped Barrett to add 91, when the latter wa» finely oaught, and just before the end of the first day Blackham was bowled for a very useful innings of 63. W hen play was commenced on December 27 V ictoria had scored 239 for nine wickets, and only 12 were added before the innings was brought to an end. Garrett took four wickets for 44, and Charlton threa for 37 ru n s; Turner’s one wicket cost 54 runs. N ew South Wales began batting with Bannerman and M ’Kenzie, to the bowling of Hugh Trumble and Trott. Trum ble’s bowling was singuularly effective, and the highest scorer Moses, who contributed 20 out of 94 from the bat. Trum ble took six wickets at a cost of only 40 runs. Following on in a m inority of 142, New South Wales began badly, Bonnor, who went in first with Bannerman, being stumped w ith the total at 13. Moses and Bannerman, however, offered a determined resistance, and at the end of the second day they were both still in with the total 91 for tw o wickets—Bannerman, 57; Moses, 27. On Saturday, December 28, the m atch was continued, and when the luncheon interval arrived the score was 152 for four wickets— Bannerman (not out) 72. Banner m an remained till the total was 237, when he was run out. H e gave one easy chance to J. W . Trumble at short-slip when he had made 96, but this was the only mistake during his long innings of six hours. The m atch was finished on Monday, Dec. 30. Ferris, who was not out 8, was easily caught in the first over, and as Charlton and Wales gave no trouble, the latter being bowled the first ball, the innings closed for 261 — an addition of 13 runs. Donnan carried out his bat for a very useful score of 34. W ith 120 to win the Victorians sent in Harry and Bruce to oppose the bowling of Turner V icto r ia . a ±$r i h^arrant, b C. Eady . 25 G. Barrett, w ho had played so well in the first innings, and Trott, however, defied every change of bow ling, and they won the match for V ictoria by eight wickets. The batting trophy was won by Bannerman, that for bowling by H . Trumble. The G overnor of V ictoria and the E arl of H opetoun were present on tw o o f the four days, and great interest was taken in the m atch, the receipts amount ing to nO less than £977 10s. The V ictorian Eleven won this match, played at H obart Tow n on January 8 and 9, very easily, having an innings and 137 runs to spare when the game ended. Over, who made his first appearance in an Inter-Colonial match, was the highest scorer for V ictoria with 91. The Tasmanians made a very poor show when their turn came to bat, and the side collapsed so quickly that there were only eight to go in, three of the team arriving too late to go in. T rott’ s curly bow ling proved altogether too m uch for the Tasmanians. In the match he took twelve wickets for 91 runs.
