Cricket 1890
8 0 6 CBICKET 2 A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. AUG . 7, 1890. hands of che same team last week at Maid stone. The choice of innings fell to the Kent captain, but the wicket seemed to have hardly recovered from the effects of the rain of Saturday. At any rate it was not so favourable for run-getting as is usually the case on the St. Lawrence Ground, and Monday’s play only realised 179 runs for twenty-thrse wickets, or an average of under eight runs for each bats man. Mr. Daffen and Alec Hearne put on 51 runs for the first wicket, but after this no one except Messrs. Patterson and Kemp, the latter of whom scored 26 out of 32 while he was in, offered any serious resistance to the Australian bowlers. Of the five who were tried Turner and Trott were the most suc cessful, but Ferris also kept a good length, and it was certainly a creditable performance to get rid of Kent for a total of 145. When the Australians went in Martin bowled with great- success, and the three batsmen who had been dismissed at the end of the first day were all to his credit. With Lyons, Murdoch, and Turner out for 34 the Australians resumed the game on Tuesday morning, and they fared so badly on the resumption against the bowling of Martin and Wright that the seven remaining wickets were secured for an addi tion of only eighty runs. The first hour only realised 19 runs at a cost of four wickets, and altogether the innings, which closed for 114, occupied three hours and a half, so that runs were only got at an average of thirty-three an hour, a strong proof of the excellent out cricket of the Kent eleven. Going in a second time with a useful majority of 31 the County again made a good start, Mr. Hamilton and Alec Hearne putting on 78 runs in about the same number of minutes before the latter was caught. After this, though, Ferris’ bowl ing proved very effective, and Mr. Hamilton saw George Hearne, Messrs. Daffen, Patter son, and Fox out before the end of the second day, having contributed 71 of the 132 soored for the loss of five wickets. Mr. Hamilton continued to play free cricket yesterday, and he saw the rest of the side out, adding 46 of the 73 put on for the last five wickets. Going in first he went right through the innings, contributing 117 out of 201 from the bat. He was batting for just over four hours, and except for a hard chance on Friday there was no mistake. This was his first appear ance against an Australian team, and as an exhibition of good defence, with plenty of hit when required, his performance was worthy of the highest praise. Wanting 237 to win, Murdoch as usual sent in Dr. Barrett and Lyons to commence the second innings of the Australians. Lyons, as is his wont, scored fast, having got 27 out of 31 runs when he was bowled. This proved, too, to be the highest score as none of the rest but Barrett, Jones and Blackham did anything, and when the tenth wicket fell they were in aminority of 108 runs. Mr. Daffen was very successful at the finish. He took the last four wickets at a cost of only 5 runs. Dr. Barrett was in over an hour and a half for his 23. K ent . First Innings. A.
