Cricket 1890

JU L Y 17, 1890. CRICKET: A WEEKLY EE CORD OF THE GAME. 2 6 9 M.C.O. & G. v. DERBYSHIRE. The Derbyshire eleven, with Messrs. Spof- forth and S. H. Evershed as well as Chatterton all away, made a poor show against a moderate team of M.C.C. & G. at Lord’s on Monday and Tuesday. Marylebone, winning the toss, were not dismissed till the second morning. Nine of the eleven got double figures, and the total was 452 before the tenth wicket fell. The ohief credit of this performance rested with the Cheshire professional, Davenport Going in fourth wicket down with the total at 76, he was not out when the innings closed. He was in altogether just five hours, and during this time there was no mistake to detract from the merit of an exceptionally good display of battingi Though the wicket was in excellent condition -for run-getting the Derbyshire eleven were not seen to advantage in either innings, and in less than five hours they were out twice for an aggregate of 271. Davidson, indeed, was the only one of the eleven who offered a lengthy resistance each time, and his play was quite the best feature of the Derbyshire side. He went in second wicket down in each case, and while carrying out his bat in the first, was ninth out in the second innings. His only mistake, too, was in the latter, in which he ought to have been caught in the long field when he had got 21. Marylebone won by an innings and 181 runs. M.C.C. & G.
