Cricket 1890

JULY 10,1890. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 2 5 1 DERBYSHIRE v. YORKSHIRE. The Yorkshire eleven were again without Lord Hawke, Mr. W. F. Whitwell, Peel, and Ulyett for this match, begun at Derby on Monday, and the result was even a more decisive defeat than at Birmingham on the previous Saturday. Derbyshire, on the other hand, had a very strong side, including Mr. F. R. Spofforth, and the eleven made full use of their opportunities in winning the toss. Going in first, their batting was seen to the best advantage on an excellent wicket. At luncheon the score was 98 with only one bats man (Sugg) out, and Mr. Wright, Chatterton, Davidson, and Mr. Evershed all soored so well that, when the fourth wicket fell, the totalwas 213. After Bagshaw came in rain began to descend heavily, but the Yorkshire men kept the field, and with a wet ball fared even worse than before. Davidson and Bag shaw adding 55 before the former, who had been in two hours, was bowled by a lob for an exceedingly good innings of 68. Storer helped Bagshaw to add 27 in a quarter of an hour, when the downpour became so heavy that the game had to be suspended for the day. Derbyshire had then scored 295 for six wickets, and this number was increased on Tuesday morning to 312. Mr. Wright and Chatterton had put on 114 for the second wicket, and neither made a mistake, though the former, when he had got 37, played a ball on to his wicket without removing the bails. Mr. Evershed’s 35 in cluded a hit for six. As the wicket dried under the sun on Tuesday it was all in favour of the bowlers, and the Yorkshiremen were thus placed at a great disadvantage. Still, they played up very pluckily, and their first innings, which lasted two hours and fifty minutes, realised a very respectable total of 177, to which Hall was the chief contributor with 49. Though in the follow-on they lost three of the best batsmen for 13, Lee and Wainwright hit away freely, and 65, of which the latter’s share was 43, were added before the next wicket was secured. After Lee, who was in anhour and a quarter for his 34, was out the sixth wicket down, however, Mr. Spofforth and Davidson quickly finished the match off,the last four batsmen being dismissed in sixteen balls. Derbyshire thus gained an easy vic tory by an innings and 25 runs. D e r b y s h ir e . Mr. L. G. Wright, c Bolton, b Hall ... 80 W. CHESHIRE Limited to two days, this match, begun at Stoke on Monday, was left unfinished, a sult duo to heavy rain on each day. At lunch time, Cheshire, who won the toss, h d scored 111 for one wicket, and when play was stopped at 3.45, this had been increased to 150 for the loss of another batsman. Owing to the wet, a resumption was not possible till two o’clock on Tuesday, and after 47 had been added without another wicket, the innings was closed, Pointon being not out 109, a fine display of batting. Staffordshire fared very badly against the bowling of Bennett, Brown and Mr. Browning, and when the gameended still wanted 63 to avert an innings efeat, with seven wickets in hand. Mr. Heath’s one wicket for Staffordshire cost 10, Brown’s one 72 runs. Bennett took four wickets for Cheshire for 43, Mr. Browning five for 32, Brown four for 52 runs. C h e s h ir e . Mr. A. M.
