Cricket 1890

JULY 3, 1890. CRICKET: ' A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 2 2 9 SURREY v. MIDDLESEX. A little over a day sufficed for the comple tion of the first match between these counties, played at the Oval at the end of last week. Rain prevented a commencement on Thurs day, and there was only half an hour of actual play on Saturday morning. Middlesex, who were without Mr. E. A. Nepean, were lucky enough to go in first, while the wicket was easy after the rain, and for the first hour the Surrey bowlers could do nothing. Messrs. Webbe and Stoddart made full use of their opportunities, too, and these two batsmen scored 80 runs in sixty minutes. When the wicket began to dry under the sun, however, Lohmann made the ball do a lot, and his analysis after he went on at the pavilion end was remarkable. The score was one short of the hundred when Mr. Stoddart was bowled, and so difficult was Lohmann to the remain ing batsmen that the last nine wickets fell for an addition of 41 runs, of which Mr. O’Brien contributed 15. Lohmann’s success when he went on a second time, as already stated, was extraordinary. After he changed over he took seven wickets at a cost of only 11 runs, and two of them were from very fine catches. Messrs. Stoddart and Webbe both played brilliant cricket, and the only chance by either was a chance by the latter to point when he had got 10. The commencement of Surrey’s innings was a great contrast to that of Middle sex. Mr. Shuter, Abel, and Mr. Key were out with the total only 5, but the two Reads made full amends by some spirited batting, and their stand for the fourth wicket, resulting in an addition of 109 runs in seventy minutes, gave the game a turn in favour of Surrey. Mr. Henery misjudged a hit by Maurice at long-off when he had made 14, but this was the only actual chance by either batsman. Later on Lockwood and Wood also scored freely, and Mr. Roller played steadily, retiring the tenth wicket for a useful score of 22. Going in a second time in a minority of 59 runs Middlesex fared badly under the disad vantage of an uncertain light, and when play ceased had lost five of their best wickets for only 37 runs. At one time on Saturday morn ing it looked as if rain might possibly prevent the completion of the game. A heavy shower did cause the players to seek shelter after three balls had been delivered, but on a resumption Lohmann and Sharpe quickly dismissed the remaining batsmen for an addition of only 20 runs. Surrey had an easy win by an innings and 2 runs. Atogether Lohmann took twelve Middlesex wickets for 69 and Sharpe eight for 85 runs. M id d l e s e x . First Innings. Mr. A. E.
