Cricket 1890
i'u >i UfcM*. JULY 3, 1890. CEICKET : A WEEKLY EE COED OF THE GAME. 227 LANCASHIEB v. SUSSEX. Lancashire did a brilliant performance in its first match of the season against Sussex, set down for Manchester on the first three days of this week. The rain which prevailed all over England prevented a commencement on Monday, and though a start was made on Tuesday just before luncheon, the game was delayed more than once during the afternoon by showers. The Sussex bowlers had conse quently not only to bowl on an easy wicket, but with a wet ball, and though they were able to get rid of Barlow and Sugg cheaply, their successes ended there. Ward and Briggs, who became partners with the score at 31, indeed, played the bowling with such ease and confidence that at the end of the day they were still in, having then added no less than 215 runs. Their stay at the wickets extended over two hours and forty minutes, so that they scored at the rate of eighty runs an hour. Ward played with his usual care, while Briggs hit freely as is his wont, making the first hundred in about the same number of minutes. On the other hand Ward was at the wickets over three hours for his 77. Rain de layed a recommencement until after luncheon yesterday, and then Sussex had to bat, the Lancashire captain having closed the innings at the overnight total. The wicket drying under the sun was all in favour of the bowlers, and Briggs and Watson were so unplayable that in a little over an hour and ten minutes the innings was over for 35. Following on 211 to the bad, Susser. fared even worse in the second attempt, and by six o’clock the match was over, leaving Lancashire with the victory by an innings and 187 runs. Briggs and Watson bowled unchanged throughout the match for Lancashire. Though both had extraordinary figures, Watson’s were the more remarkable, his analvsis showing 46 overs and four balls for 13 runs and nine wickets. There was not a double figure, it will be seen, in either innings of Su sex. Thi 3 is, we believe, the first occasion on which a Captain has declared his first innings e ded in a first-class match, with only two bats men out, L a n c a s h ir e .
