Cricket 1890

JUNE 26,1890. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 2 1 9 GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. SURREY. Though better represented than in the first match of the season at the Oval, Gloucester shire—without Woof, as well as Messrs. Brain, Page, and Townsend, not to mention Mr. Beloher, who made such a favourable appear ance for Kent last week—had only a fairly good side, when the return with Surrey began on the New County Ground at Bristol on Monday. On the other hand Surrey had quite its full strength, Henderson, Bowley, and Beaumont being all displaced. Mr. Shuter, who won the toss and went in with Abel, gave the game a favourable aspect for Surrey at the very outset, the score being 88 before the latter was out. His excellent example, too, was followed by most of the later batsmen, and Abel, whose score of 60 was without a fault, Mr. Key, Maurice Read, Lohmann, and Wood all scored freely, in spite of some excel lent fielding, from the Gloucestershire bowlers. Maurice Read and Lohmann added 73 for the seventh, and Wood and Brockwell 52 for the ninth wicket. The innings only lasted a little under five hours, so that the Surrey men scoired at a rate of 75 runs anhour. Glouces tershire, who had overnight lost one batsman (Mr. Evans) for four runs, made such a poor show on the following morning against the bowling of Sharpe, Lohmann, and Mr. Roller, that two hours sufficed to dispose of the nine remaining batsmen for an aggregate of 127. At one time it looked as if the total would be much worse. Half the wickets were down for 40, and it was only the good cricket of Mr. Pullen, combined with the vigorous hitting of Painter, who got 35 of the last 48 runs, that made the aggregate at all respectable. Follow ing on in a minority of 245, Gloucestershire again fared badly, Mr. Radcliffe, Painter, and Mr. W. G. Grace being all out with the total only 37* Messrs. E, M. Grace and Cranston, however, played up so well that at one time it looked as if the innings might be saved. Mr. W. W . Read’s lobs, though, proved of great use when the other bowlers had been knocked off, and he took four of the last five wickets at a cost of only 27 runs. Messrs. E. M. Grace and Cranston were responsible for 127 of Gloucestershire’s second total of 183, and neither gave a chance The former hit with quite his old freedom, scoring 77 out of 118 in just over an hour and a half. Surrey won by an innings and 62 runs. SCRREY. Abel, c W. G. Grace, b Roberts.................60 Mr. J. Shuter, c Pul len, b M urth..........45 Mr. K. J.
