The ground at Gravesend is, as a general rule, fast, and all in favour of run-getting. At the end of last week, though, it was suffering from the heavy rains just previously, and the scoring was throughout slow and laboured. Kent, who lost the toss, had to take the field first, but so good was their out cricket that it took the Nottinghamshire eleven four hours andtwenty minutes to complete a total of 208. The only features of the innings were the exceptionally fine crioket of Arthur Shrewsbury at the outset, and a very useful stand by Butler and Attewell for the eighth wioket. Shrewsbury, who as usual opened the batting, was sixth out. At the wicket just over two hours and a half, he did not give even the semblance of a chance, and he scored more than his fair share of the runs, contri buting 83 out of 114 while he was in. Attewell and Butler put on 78 runs, and the former, who had been resting for the last week or so owing to a strain, hit hard and well for his 54, with only one mistake, when he had got 15. Kent, who on Thursday night had scored 24 without a wicket, would have made a poor show but for the unvarying steadiness of Mr, Daffen. Going in first he saw nine batsmen go, and was, unfortunately, himself the last out. To be in four hours and a half against the bowling of Notts is of itself a great perfor mance, and in Mr. Daffen’scase it was empha sised by the fact that as far as we saw he gave no chance. His consistent watchfulness was worthy of the highestpraise, and in their latest addition to the eleven Kent have certainly found a very useful and reliable batsman. Kent, who had just managed to save the follow on, put their opponents in on Friday for an hour and a half, and so difficult did the Nottingham batsmen find it to score that in that time they were only able to secure 42 runs at the expense of one wicket. On Saturday morning Gunn and Flowers added 58 before they were separated, and when the second wicket fell Notts were 173 on. Some un necessarily tedious cricket followed Attewell’s dismissal, and Scotton, who was actually batt ing two hours for six, and Butler, while they were together, only added 37 runs in an hour and a quarter. In the hope of winning, Mr. Wright, who captained the Notts eleven in the absence of Mr. Dixon, closed his innings with the total 157 for five wickets. This left Kent with 231 to get, and as only two hours and a half remained their only chance was to play out time. Mr. Marchant and George Hearne put on 49, but after the former’s retirement things went all in favour of Notts, and when Pentecost came in on the fall of the eighth wicket forty minutes were still left. A defeat for Kent then seemed certain, but the last two batsmen fortunately gave Hearne very useful help, and at the finish Martin played with great pluck and judgment. In spite of the excellent bowling of Shacklock, Attewell, and Richardson, supported by close fielding, Hearne and Martin kept up their wickets till the end, and tha game was after all left drawn, Kent wanting 133 runs to win with one batsman to go. Hearne’s innings was invaluable. He never lost his head till the last, and his judgment at the finish, when the game hung in the balance, was invaluable. A collection of £5 10s. was made on the ground in appreciation of his masterly display, and of this a£l 5s. was given to Martin. N o t t s . First Innings. *Second Innings. Shrewsbury, c A., b G.
