Cricket 1890
JUNE 12, 1890. CR ICK E T : A W E E K L Y RECORD OF THE GAM E ; 179 SUSSEX v. NOTTS. The Sussex eleven have latterly fared very badly against the formidable combination representing Notts, and their second match of the present season did not show them to any better advantage. Rain had fallen at Brighton, as well as in other parts of England, on Sunday, and the ground in consequence was very slow when the time arrived for a start on Monday. Mr. Wright won the toss for Notts, and, on the assumption that the wicket would improve under the influence of the sun and wind, decided to take the field. The experiment proved successful, mainly through the good bowling of Attewell, to whom the Sussex batsmen, with one exception, offered no opposition. Th« exception was Jesse Hide, who played with confidence and judg ment for his 43, in which were seven 4’s. Attewell took eight (four of them clean bowled) of the ten wickets, and only 32 runs were made from his bowling. The ground was in better condition for run-getting when Notts went in, and Shrewsbury and Butler found the Sussex bowling so easy that the score was 94 before Shrewsbury was out. Gunn then joined Butler, and at the end of the day they were still in, the latter having contributed 89 of the 181 runs scored. Rain reduced the cricket on Tuesday to less than two hours, during which time Notts made 86 at the expense of two more wickets. Butler saw both batsmen go and was still not out, having added 49 runs. Yesterday morning he increased his score to 171 before he was caught at long-off. He had been in altogether a little over four hours and a half, and with the exception of a chance when he had made 161 had no actual life as far as we could see. On the whole, it was a most creditable display of batting, and this fine performance should invest his future doings with additional interest. At the fall of the sixth wicket Mr. Wright declared the innings closed, and Sussex had to go in at 1.45 with practically little chance of saving the game. This they failed to do, as the tenth wicket fell at 119, leaving Notts the winners by an innings and 138 runs. S u s s e x . First Innings. Play was only possible for two hours and a half on Tuesday, and as yesterday it had to be suspended after thirty-five runs were added, it was decided to give up the game as drawn. Pickett did the hat trick in Warwick shire’s first innings, dismissing Shilton Pallett, and Cresswell with successive balls. W a r w ic k s h ir e . First Innings.
