Cricket 1890

JAN. 27, 1890. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME, 13 position. ‘‘ That a general meeting of the elub be called, when the following would be submitted:—‘ In order to provide the sum still required for the liquidation of the debts of the club, that the subscription for 1890 be doubled,’ ” and in the course of his remarks said it was evident that as the 1,000 odd members had made no response to the appeals made, that either an incentive or pressure must be brought to bear. If the subscriptions were doubled, the amount still required would then be forthcoming, and if any of them did not pay, they would lose all benefits of the club. Probably many would leave them, but still undoubtedly they would have a thousand members left on the books. Mr. W. R. Horncastle seconded the pro position. Mr. Crawley said that though not actually connected with the Essex County Club, still, as suggestions had been asked for, he sub mitted the following for clearing off the debt, viz., that the olub should be turned into a company. The chairman said that a similar scheme had been broached before, but it was found that the members did not take sufficient interest therein. Mr. Jackson’s proposition was then put from the chair, and carried unanimously. The chairman hoped that all present would attend the next meeting so as to give ex pression <fcotheir views, and Mr. Green hoped that in the meantime the flow of donations would not be stopped. He had reason to believe that several gentlemen intended to contribute, and as the club was not yet out of the wood, he trusted they would scud along. Votes of thanks to the chair, and also to Mr. C. E. Green for his indefatigable exertions on behalf of the club, were duly carried, and the meeting came to a termination. The general meeting will be called for Tuesday next, at the Great Eastern Railway Hotel, Bishopsgate. CRICKET IN SOUTH AFRICA. PORT ELIZABETH v. UNION. Played at Port Elizabeth on Deo. 7. H. H. This match, played on the former's ground, at Cape Town, on Dec. 26, was originally intended to have been Western Province v. Army and Navy. The departure of the Raleigh and Brisk for Delagoa Bay, however, necessitated a change in the fixture, and the Western Province had to play a weak eleven of All Comers. Frank Hearne played for the latter, but only scored 11 in his two innings. Theunissen took eight wickets of All Comers for 53, De Villiers nine for 68 runs. A l l C om ers . First Innings. E.
