166 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JUNE 5, 1890. O X F O R D U N I V E R S I T Y v .L A N C A S H IR E - T h e O xford eleven brought th e ir hom e f ix tures to a successful conclusion on Tu esd ay w ith a b rillia n t victo ry over alm ost the fu ll strength of La n cash ire. T h e U n iv e rs ity had not won any of th e ir previous m atches th is year, and as they w ere p layin g w ith o u t th eir m ost successful bow ler, th e F re sh m a n , M r. G . F . B e rke ley, th e ir prospects ag ainst such a form idable opposition d id not appear to be p a rticu la rly b rig h t. A s it happened, though, the La n ca sh ire eleven w ere seen to disadvan tage throughout, and though th ey had the lu ck to get first in n in g s, never at an y point looked lik e w in n in g , T w e lv e batted on each side , though only eleven fielded, and S m ith ’s fast bow ling, pitched ra th e r short, got up at tim es so m uch th at none of the La n ca sh ire batsm en could do m uch w ith h im . Though s ix of the side got double figures, the total only am ounted to 138, and of these 63 were obtained from M r. S m ith , who took seven w ickets in tw enty-fo ur overs, a most creditable perform ance. W hen O xford w ent in , too, the county fared b adly, and 22 ru n s cam e from M old’s firs t over. Sch w an n , the old C lifto n ia n , and L le w e ly n p ut on 54 before the la tte r was out, b ut the form er stayed u n til 200 w as up, and w as then only ru n out u n lu ck ily . H e was at the w ickets ju s t three hours, and there w as no fa u lt of an y k in d to be found w ith a more th an u su ally prom ising d isp lay of batting. L a te r on the Fre sh m an , P a la ire t, played the La n cash ire bow ling w ith great confidence, and at the end of the first d ay he was not out w ith 45 to h is cred it, and the total 230 for seven w ickets. On Tu esd ay m orning P a la ire t w as caught at the w icket w itho ut another ru n , but B rad b y and S m ith scored fre e ly, and m a in ly through th eir efforts the to tal was raised to^274 before the eleventh w icke t fe ll. L a n ca sh ire entered on th e ir second inning s 136 to the bad, and the batting showed no im provem ent on the previous d isplay. T h is tim e there w ere seven doubles, but excepting Sugg and M essrs. Kem ble and K em p no one seemed at home w ith M r. Sm ith , w ho again w as m ost successful, securing s ix w ickets for an average of under 14 ru n s. L e ft w ith only 7 to w in , M essrs. Gresson and Lle w e ly n got them q u ickly, and the U n iv e rs ity th us gained a thoroughly well-deserved victo ry w ith eleven w ickets to spare. T h e success of O xford w as specially notew orthy, as it w as the first w in since th ey defeated S u rre y at the O val, on Ju n e 29, 1887. In La n cash ire ’s tw o in n in g s S m ith took th irteen w ickets for an aggregate of 146 ru n s. I t is needless to add th a t h is b ow ling p ra c tic a lly decided the m atch in favour of h is side. L ancash ire . First Innings. Second Innings. T h e P a rk Avenue ground at B radford is one of the best in E n g lan d for ru n -g ettin g , and the experience of the m atch between these counties, begun on M onday, did not belie its reputation. T h e game lasted u n til late ye s terd ay afternoon, and d uring the three days as m an y as 1,091 runs w ere scored for th irty- fo u r w icke ts, an average of ju s t over 32 ru n s. Su sse x, w in n in g the toss, w ere in a ll the firs t d ay, scoring 285. Seven of the eleven got double figures, and Q uaife, who has begun the season in b rillia n t style, was again the p rin cip al scorer. H e w ent in first and was second out at 82, of w h ich he had contribu ted 67 w ith o u t a chance. Good as the total w as, it w as, how ever, not enough w ith the bow ling at the comm and of the Sussex captain to give them an y real advantage, and the Y o rk sh ire- men scored so fast on T u e sd ay th at in four hours 382 ru n s were m ade, an average of n early 100 ru n s an h o u r. O n ly two of the eleven got single figures, but the p rin cip al execution w as done by the e arlie r batsm en. U ly e tt and H a ll m ade 118 fo r the first w icket in an hour and ten m inutes, and Le e and L o rd H aw ke were seen to equal advantage. T h e first four batsm en w ere responsible for 278 of the total, and even H a ll, not a fast run-getter, played w ith freedom . Lo rd IJa w k e h it in dashing style, scoring 65 out of 97 in an hour, w ith one life w hen he had got 12. L e e ’s batting, though, w as the best of the inning s. H e w ent in first and w as eighth out, h avin g been in two hours and ten m inutes for a ve ry fine score of 94. On Tu esd ay night Su sse x, who w ent in a second tim e 103 to the bad, had made 113 at the cost of three of th e ir best batsm en, and yesterday the total w as increased to 260 before the la st w icket fe ll.
