D avid son took six w ickets fo r 36 runs, and had the D erbysh ire fielding been up to th e m ark his average w ould h ave been m u ch better. T h e D erbysh ire m en, in th eir turn, did n ot m ake a very prom isin g start, and w hen the third w ick et fell th e total w as on ly 40. C h atter ton, w h o had gone in before a run w as scored, how ever, found a useful partner in M r. E v er- shed, and the score rose so fast w hile they w ere togeth er that forty-five m inutes realised 81 ru n s. C hatterton w as th e eighth batsm an out, h avin g m ade 86 ou t of 167 during his stay. T h ou gh he ou gh t to have been out tw ice early in his innings, w h en he had settled dow n his b attin g w as up to the best standard. Surrey entered on th eir second in n in gs on T u esd ay m orn in g 136 runs to the bad, and w ith th e gam e apparently all against th em . Som e steady crick et by A bel and H enderson, how ever, took the edge off the D erbysh ire bow ling, and later on the tw o y ou n g players, B rock w ell an d W atts, as w ell as W o o d , scored freely. H enderson w as in tw o hours for bis 50, and h is w atch fu l cricket did m u ch to turn the scale in favour of S urrey. T h e respectable second score of 263 m ade b y Surrey le ft D erbyshire w ith 128 to w in, and there w as every hope o f a good finish. L u ck ily, L ob m a n n w as able to bow l at th e pin ch , and, backed b y good fielding, the Surrey m en w ere able to pull th e m atch ou t o f th e fire, gettin g rid of their opponents for 99. Though not represented by a p articu la rly strong batting side, the M arylebone Club had a ll the best of the firs t m atch of the sea son w ith O xford U n iv e rsity , begun at O xford on T h u rsd a y, and S atu rd ay afternoon saw them in possession of an easy w in , w ith eight w ickets to spare. Thesig er w as fortunate enough to w in the toss, and, considering the bow ling to w hich they were opposed, O xford did w ell to secure a total of 248. F o r a good p art of th is they w ere indebted to the tail. T h e score, indeed, w as only 139 w hen the six th w icket fell, so th at the last four batsm en added 114. B assett and B rad b y p ut on 63 ru n s w h ile they w ere together by liv e ly cricket, and the form er, who was in altogether two hours and ten m inutes, w as even tually not out w ith a ve ry useful score of 54 to h is cred it. Though M r. W ilkin so n w as soon out when M .C .C . w ent in , thanks to some fine h ittin g by M r. H ew ett, assisted by C hatterton, they had scored 85 for one w icket on T h u rsd a y n ig ht, and th is num ber w as raised to 104 the follow in g m orning before the am ateur w as leg-before. In an hour, and in ve ry fine style, he had made 71, in w h ich were a 6 , a h it to square-leg over the rin g , and eleven 4’s. On h is departure, H earne and Chatterton made even a longer stand, and the score advanced at a good pace u n til Chatterton’s b rillia n t in n in g s of two hours and th irty-five m inutes w as brought to a close. In h is 75 were tw o fine on-drives for s ix . T h e tw o professionals had added 119 d u rin g th e ir p artn ersh ip , but H earne did not stay m uch longer at the w ickets, oeing w ell caught th irteen ru n s la te r fo r an exceedingly useful and w ell-played60. Some free h ittin g by D avid so n , M r. F o w le r and Pougher was the only feature of the latte r p art of the innings w h ich closed for 315, or 62 ahead. Going in a second tim e, O xford only did m oderately w e ll, and w hen p lay ceased on F rid a y , h alf the w ickets were down for 106, or but 44 on. T h e late r batsm en, too, fared badly against the bow ling of M artin and D avidson, and soon a fte r one o’clock the side were out for an addition of 38 ru n s. T h is le ft M .C .C . w ith 83 to w in , and though the first ball dism issed M r. W ilk in so n , when H earne and C hatterton became p artners on the fa ll of the second w icket, the ru n s were q u ickly got, both batsm en p layin g excellen t cricke t.
