154 CRICKET: A WEEKLY EECORD OP THE GAME. MAY 29, 1890. S U S S E X v . G L O U C E S T E R S H IR E . A fte r three days of generally h ig h scoring, the firs t m atch of the season between these Counties, begun on M onday at B rig h to n , ended yesterday in a -victory fo r Sussex w ith no less th an 221 runs to spare. G lo ucestershire w as better represented th an at M aidstone at the end of last week, as M r. P u lle n w as able to take h is place in the eleven, and also M r. J . A . B u sh . Sussex, h aving won the_ toss, sent in Q uaife and M r. N ew , of Sou th w ick, a firs t appearance, we believe. A t luncheon tim e the total w as 105 w ith two w ickets down, and the in n in g s did not close u n til ju st before s ix o’clo ck. Q uaife and M r. N ew ham were the p rin cip a l scorers, and they put on 109 ru n s for the th ird w icket. T h e form er w as b atting ju st three hours, and though he ought to have been stumped w hen he had got 15, h is 74 w as altogether a cap ital d isplay of sound and attractive batting. M r. N ew ham , on the other hand, w as only in an hour and three- quarters for h is 71, and d uring the la tte r p art of h is in n in g s h is cricke t w as p a rticu la rly fine. G loucestershire, w ho at the end of the first day had scored 13 for the loss of one of th e ir best batsm en (M r. R ad cliffe), h ard ly fared as w e ll as m ig h t have been expected on the follow ing m orning. E ig h t of the eleven got double figures, b ut M r. W . G . G race’s 58 w as the highest score, and he ought to have been caught in the slips w hen be had only got a couple. M r. F ra n c is played care fu lly and w ell for h is 40, and gave no actu al chance d uring the two hours he w as batting. "When Sussex w ent in a second tim e in a m a jo rity of 74 ru n s, Q uaife batted in b rillia n t form , and at the end of the second day, of the 137 m ade for the loss of three w ickets, he had made 78 and Jesse H id e 56, both batsm en being not out. Yesterd ay, H id e added nineteen before he w as caught, b ut Q uaife continued to score freely, and w hen M r. N ew ham declared the in n in g s closed he w as s till in , h aving made 156 of the total of 295 for seven w ickets. In the m atch he scored 230 ru n s for once out, and everyone w ill be h e a rtily glad to see him returning to the exceptionally good form he showed tw o years ago. In h is second score of 156 not out there w as only one chance, to short-leg not long before the in n in g s was closed. Am ong h is figures w ere tw enty-tw o 4’s, tw o 3’s, and th irteen 2’s. G loucestershire w ere in a thankless position w hen th e y went in ju s t Ibefore luncheon, w an tin g 370 to w in w ith only three hours and three-quarters left for p la y . T h e bow ling of B e an and Jesse H id e , too, proved too good to adm it of any ve ry lengthy stand, and though M essrs. R a d cliffe and F ra n c is at one tim e looked like getting set, when the tenth w icket fe ll, w ith the total at 148, Sussex w ere left w ith a very easy victo ry . S ussex . First Innings. Mr. F.
