F I F T H M A T C H —v. S U R R E Y . T h e A u stra lia n team made th e ir first appearance in Lo ndo n at the O val at the end of last w eek, and w ith the most favourable results, defeating the fu ll strength of S u rre y d ecisively, and w ith o u t any possible excuse for the beaten side. T h e m atch w as regarded w ith p a rticu la r in tere st, not only on account of the reputation of the S u rre y eleven, but because, in addition, the public w as anxious to see how the A u stra lia n s would fare on a p itch favouring the batsm an instead of the bow ler, as- had been the case in th e ir previous engagements. M r* S h u ter w as fortunate enough to w in the toss, and S u rre y’s sup porters w ere n a tu ra lly ve ry hopeful w hen it w as found th a t th ey had got first use of an excellent w icket. A t the outset, too, it looked as if there w as every chance of a long score. M r. Sh u ter w as out at 17, and A b el at 47. T h e two Reads b y good cricket, how ever, im proved S u rre y’s position m ate ria lly, and at one tim e 120 was up w ith only two batsm en out. T h e A u stra lia n bow ling, supported as it w as by excellent field ing , w as too good to adm it of any but careful p lay, and M aurice R ead , generally a fast scorer, w as in n early tw enty-five m inutes w ith o u t m aking a ru n . T h e R eads p ut on 76 fo r the th ird w icket, and H enderson, who stayed w ith W .W ., raised the to tal from 133 to 191 fo r the sixth . A t th is la tte r to tal M r. R ead w as caught, and after h is retirem ent there came such a collapse th at the in n in g s, w h ich at one tim e had seen 190 up w ith only five batsm en out, closed for 200 . Of the total of 190 from the bat, the two R eads had contributed 127. W .W .’s 87 was in every w ay w orth y of h is high reputation. W h ile batting w ith oare, he lost no chance of run-getting, and h is score w as made w ith o u t anything lik e a fau lt. T h e A u stralian s had ju st over two hours left for batting on T h u rsd a y, and d uring th is tim e lost four w ickets fo r 106. B a rre tt, who had strained h im se lf e arly in the day and had B u m to field for h im after luncheon, showed good steady cricket, and M urdoch’s 40 was got in h is old and attractive style, though he ought to have been stum ped before he had scored. W hen p lay w as resum ed on F rid a y m orning, things w ent for a tim e in favour of S u rre y, and w ith seven of the best A u stra lia n batsm en out for 160, the game seemed fa irly even. W alte rs, who had been p layin g stead ily from the first, found a valuable p artn er in B lack h am , and the latte r, as he has frequently before, changed the whole aspect of the game. H ittin g w ith ch aracte ristic resolution, he scored w ith great freedom , and at one tim e 66 runs w ere made in three-quarters of an hour. H e made h is 75 in ju st under the hour, and as an exh ib itio n of resolute fearless h ittin g , h is inning s w as w o rth y of unstinted praise. W alte rs carried out h is bat for 53, a d isp lay of the greatest value and equal m erit in a different style. T h e accounts th a t had reached us from A u stra lia represented h im as a free bat and g enerally fast scorer. On th is occasion, though, h is p lay w as m arked by u n w earyin g steadiness, and the valu e of h is co nsistently w atch fu l cricket cannot be over rated. Though th ey w ere 78 behind on the first hands, there seemed to be no reason, as the w ick e t w as, w h y S u rre y should not show up w ell in the second innings. A n u n fo rtu nate commencem ent, though, w as m ade, Abel being cleverly th ro w n out by F e rris from th ird m an before he had scored. S h u te r and M aurice Read gave the game a b etter aspect, and 60 was up w itfro n ly one batsm an out. T h e substitutio n of L y o n s for F e rris , how ever, w orked an e xtrao rd in ary change again, and w hen the seventh w icket fe ll the to tal w as only 97. B o th the Reads were caught from fu ll pitches, and Lockw ood w as splendidly stum ped by B lack h am , who w as keeping w icket in h is best style. Some p lu cky batting by Wood, w hile in w ith Henderson, redeemed the poor d isplay of the S u rrey eleven a little , but the effort w as too late, and w hen the ten th w icket fe ll w ith the score at 156, the second day’s p la y came to an end. T h e A u stralian s began th e ir second in n in g s on Saturd ay m orning w ith only 79 to w in , and as the w icket w as s till hard and tru e , th e ir a b ility to get these w as never doubted. S urrey succeeded in getting rid of B a rre tt at 10, and Ly o n s at 26, but M urdoch and T ro tt got the balance w ith o u t being troubled at a ll. T h e A u stralian s thus won a ve ry creditable victo ry w ith eight w ickets to spare. S u r r e y . First Innings. Second Innings. Abel, c Trott, b Turner ... 25 run out ........... 0 Mr. J.
