A fte r some h ig h scoring throughout, the tw elve am ateurs collected by M r. A . J . Webbe succeeded in w in n in g th is m atch, begun on T h u rsd a y, at O xford, on S atu rd ay afternoon w ith 121 ru n s to spare. A t the commence m ent the ground was s till a trifle slow from recent ra in s, and at lunoheon tim e on T h u rs day s ix of M r. W ebbe’s team w ere out w ith the total only 111. In the afternoon, though, the w icket im proved considerably in pace, and tow ards the end of the day ru n s came ve ry fa st. Webbe played on at 191, after a ve ry u sefu l innings of 51, lastin g an hour and fo rty m inutes, though m arred by a chance to short slip soon after he w ent in . W hen Robertson and H ed ley became p artners, some very free h ittin g w as w itnessed. H alf-an- hour realised 67, and H ed ley w as the last out for an exceedingly w ell h it score of 43, in w h ich w ere seven fours. O xford began b attin g w ith the two Old E to n ia n s, Lle w e lyn and Jones, but except by Ja rd in e no stand of any length w as m ade, and at the end of the first day s ix w ickets were down for 95. Th e U n iv e rs ity w ere 166 behind w ith five w ickets to fa ll w hen p lay began on F rid a y , so th at th e ir prospects were not of the best. B a ssett, the not out, how ever, found a ve ry useful partner in the O ld R eptonian P a la ire t, and the p air added 53 ru n s before the form er w as caught for 30, an in n in g s of no sm all va lu e, and the resu lt of steady cricke t. P a la ire t received some help from B e rke ley, but w ith the total at 185 w as out h im se lf, caught b y the wicket-keeper standing b ack. H e had m ade 54 out of 90 w h ile he w as in , and as fa r as we could see, w ith o u t an actu al chance. W ith 65 to the good, the G entlem en began th e ir second in n in g s, and in the tw o hours and three- quarters th a t rem ained on the second day, scored 206 for the loss of s ix w ickets, W ebbe not out 58, W h ittle not out 27. Though on Saturd ay W ebbe, who had been in tw o h ours and ten m inutes for h is 33, w as soon caught, as on the first day H ed ley h it w ith rem arkable vigour, and the la tte r p art of the in n in g s resulted in an addition of 115 ru n s. H ed ley w as only in fifty m inutes for h is score of 70. H is figures included one s ix and eight fours, and there w as only one chance to m ar a b rillia n t d isplay of h ittin g . O xford w en t in on Satu rd ay afternoon w a n t in g 384 to w in , and th is task proved, as w as expected, to o m u ch for th em . T h e stand b y L lew elyn and T h esiger w as th e best feature of th e innings. T h ey raised th e score from 49 fo r fou r to 162 fo r five w ickets, and o f the 113 added th e captain w as respon sible fo r 47, th e result o f good free cricket. L lew elyn was eighth batsm an out fo r a w ell-played score o f 116. H e gave tw o chances in th e slips, one at 36, th e other at 52, b u t in spite of these m istakes the innings w as one deservin g o f the highest praise. H is figures in clu d ed tw en ty fou rs. P alairet w as again seen to advantage, bu t th e rest did little, and ju st after h a lf-p a st five o ’clock th e m atch w as over.
