T h e Som ersetshire eleven showed to great advantage at a ll points in th e ir firs t m atch w ith M iddlesex, commenced at Lo rd ’s on M onday, and when the game ended, soon after luncheon on the follow ing afternoon, were le ft w ith a thoroughly well-earned victo ry by 78 ru n s. T h e y w ere, too, w ith o u t the valuable services of M r. S . M . W oods, the Cam bridge captain, and, as M iddlesex w as represented by its best available team', th e ir success reflects v e ry h ig h credit on the all-round crioket of the Som ersetshire m en. T h e scoring on the first day w as h ard ly up to the average, and twenty-seven w icke ts fe ll before tim e was called for an aggregate of 416 ru n s. T h e chief features of the d ay’s cricket w ere the excellent h ittin g of M essrs. H e w ett and H e d ley. The form er, who is captain of the County eleven, m ade very lig h t of the M iddlesex bow ling. In the first innings he scored 31 out 42, and in the second 65 out of 105 in the hour. H e was th ird w icket down in each case, and h is h it tin g all-round w as clean and w ell tim ed . M r. H ed ley, of the R o y a! En g in e e rs, w ho played for K e n t two or three years ago under the re si d en tial q u alification as a fast bow ler, len t M r. H e w ett valuable assistance, also h ittin g w ith great freedom . M iddlesex w ent in on Tu e s day m orning w an tin g 210 to w in , and, though M essrs. W ebbe and Stoddart w ere both out in the first tw o overs, M essrs. O’B rie n and Scott scored so fast th a t it looked as if the runs m ig h t be got. T h e two am ateurs p ut on 69 ru n s in fo rty m in u tes, but after th e ir separa tion no stand w as m ade, and as, ow ing to an u n lu ck y accident to h is hand w h ile keeping w ick e t, M r. Th e Som ersetshire eleven alw ays had p len ty in hand, and they deserve the w arm est congratu latio n s on the excellent form th ey showed throughout. T h e tw o professionals, N ich ols and T y le r, bore the b ru n t of the bow ling. T h e form er got eight w ickets for 100, the la tte r nine for 121 ru n s. S o m e rsetsh ir e . First Innings.
