R eaders of C r ic k e t w ill rem em ber th at la st ye ar a m atch w as arranged between N o rth and South for th e benefit of Joh n W est, who had been engaged for m any summ ers at L o rd ’s. O w ing to continuous w et no p lay w as possible in the three days, and under the circum stances another fixtu re w as made for th is year. Soon after the m eeting of the County Secretaries, when the programm es fo r the com ing season are settled, W est died, so th at the proceeds of the m atch, begun at Lo rd ’s on M onday, w ill go to h is w idow and fa m ily. A s none of the p rin cip al Counties were engaged, tw o strong elevens w ere collected, though n eith er side was represented by quite its fa ll strength. T h e ground at the outset had not recovered from the h eavy rain s of la st w eek, and at no point of the game was it in favour of run-gettiDg. On the first day, in p a rticu la r, the bowlers carried everything before them , and an inning s w as completed on each side w ith an aggregate of only 199 for the tw en ty w ickets. T h e South, who w ent in first, found the bow ling of Atte- w ell and B rig g s too m uch fo r th em , and M r. R ead proved to be the highest scorer w ith 22, A ttew e ll, in p articu la r, required ve ry careful w atch in g , and h is an alysis of fo rty overs and a b all for fo rty ru n s and s ix w ickets shows how w ell he kept up h is end throughout. T h e first in n in g s of the N orth w as in every w ay rem arkab le one. M r. D ixo n w as bowled w ith o u t a ru n , and G u n n , B arn e s, and U lye tt a ll failed to score. B rig g s and L o rd H aw ke, in succession, gave Sh rew sbu ry some slig ht assistance, but A tte w e ll and Sh erw in both w ent w ith o u t a notch between them , and the N o rth , who had been at the w ickets altogether tw o hours and tw en ty m inutes, w ere out for 90, Sh rew sb u ry’s rem arkable perform ance re deemed the general d isp lay of the N ortherners from d iscred it. H e carried h is bat through the in n in g s, and at no tim e did he seem to be in the least troubled b y the bow ling w h ich puzzled a ll the other batsm en. H is ru n s w ere got in h is u sual polished style, and w ith o u t an yth in g lik e a flaw . M artin kept up h is end throughout the in n in g s, and Beaum ont had a good an alysis at the fin ish , takin g three w ickets at a cost of only 7 ru n s. Though the w eather on Tu esd ay w as cold and disagreeable, w ith occasional show ers, some interesting all-round cricket w as w itnessed. Shrew sbury was again seen to great advantage in the second innings of the N orth, but the features of the second day were the rea lly splendid b atting of M r. Sto dd art, and the effective bowling of Lo h m an n . M r. Stoddart, w ho w ent in first w ith M r. G race, scored w ith equal freedom from a ll the N orthern bow lers, and w h en the latter w as bow led, th e first bats m an out, he had o n ly m ade 29 ou t of 111. W h en M r. S toddart w as cau gh t at th e w icket, he had scored 115, one o f the v e ry best d is plays o f batting w e have had to record fo r a '.ong tim e. A t one period he m ade 50 w hile M r. G race w as scorin g 3, and d u rin g th e tw o hours and tw en ty m in utes he w as batting, there was n oth in g th a t could be construed in to a chance. H e m ade the greater num ber of his runs in fro n t o f th e w ick et, and his h ittin g all round w as brillian t in th e extrem e. H is score w as m ade up of eigh teen 4’s, three 'Vs, tw elve 2’s, and ten singles. T h e N orth had a difficult task before them w hen th ey w ent in, ju st before h a lf-p a st fou r o ’clock on T u esday aftern oon, w an tin g 245 to w in . Shrew sbury w as the on ly one o f th e earlier batsm en to play L oh m a n n w ith an y con fiden ce, and w hen th e seventh w ick et fell the total w as on ly 68. Shrew sbury, w h o h ad been battin g an h ou r and three-quarters, w as ou t at 78, and th ou gh M r. H orn b y and A ttew ell h it freely, th e tenth w ick et fell fo r 109, leavin g th e South the w inners b y 135 runs. L oh m a n n bow led w ith w on derfu l success at th e finish. H e g ot eight o f th e ten w ickets in the second in n in gs of th e N orth , seven o f th em clean bow led. H is b ow lin g, in fact, played no sm all part in determ ining th e result o f th e m atch. S o u th . First Innings. Mr. W. G. Grace, c A tte well, b B r ig g s ...................10 Mr. A.E.
