T h e Cam bridge E le ve n w ere at a great dis­ advantage when they w ent into the field on M onday to oppose a strongish eleven of Am ateu rs, assisted by Pougher to fill the tw e lfth p lace. T h e y w ere w ith o u t th eir cap tain, S . M . J . W oods, who had strained h im se lf la st week, and h is bowling, as the game showed, w as g reatly m issed. T h e U n i­ v e rsity tw elve, who w ent in first, occupied the w ickets u n til past five o’clock on Monday, w ith only a slig h t in terru p tio n from ra in . T h e greater portion of the total of 187 w ere made b y the new m en. F o u r of them , Douglas, R o w e ll, Beresfo rd and Jackso n , indeed, con­ trib uted 120 of 175 got from the b at. A ll showed good cricket, and D ouglas, who took Woods’ place, and got the highest score, made h is 43 w itho ut the semblance of a chance. When M r. W ebbe’s E le ve n w ent in the bow ling of the Cam bridge captain w as sadly w anted, and m ost of the earlier batsm en scored freely. The in ning s w as ch iefly noticeable for the long stand of “ W h ittle ” and H ew ett on the fa ll of the th ird w icket. These batsm en became p art­ ners w ith the total at 125, and w hile th ey were together it w as raised to 300, an addition of 175 ru n s. H ew ett, the cap tain of the Som er­ setshire E le ve n , h it w ith great vigour a ll­ round. H e w as in ju s t tw o hours, and his in n in g s of 114 w as free from a m istake. W h ittle saw the rest of h is side go, carryin g out h is b at for 91, in w h ich there w as no chance. Cam bridge had tw o hours le ft for b attin g , and during th is tim e wiped off 106 of the arrears of 176 runs on the first innings for the loss of four w ickets, Beresford again p layin g w ell for h is ru n s. On resum ing yesterd ay Cam bridge s till w anted 70 to avert an in n in g s’ defeat, and thanks to the good cricke t of the M arlborough F re sh m an , H ill, these w ere got and 36 more before the la st w icke t fe ll. Leatham and H edley m ade very lig h t of the Cam bridge bowling w hen they w ent in to open the second innings of M r.
