T h e w ick et h ad been so m u ch affected by th e rain o f th e previous day th at th e bow lers had th in gs all th eir ow n w ay in th is m atch, begun at B irm in gh am on M on day, and the gam e w as finished in tw o days. H . C. M aul w as unable to help W arw ick sh ire, b u t oth er w ise th e C ou n ty w as w ell represented. T h e A u stralians, w ho left ou t C harlton an d B urn, again h ad the ch oice o f innings, and decided to get first use o f th e w icket. T h ey fou n d the w ick et, how ever, a n yth in g but easy, and P a llett an d Sh ilton bow led w ith such success, p articu larly th e form er, that at lun ch eon tim e th e score w as o n ly 61 w ith seven bats m en out. O n the resum ption G regory played w ell, and his 18 n ot ou t w as the best display o f b attin g on the side. T h e in n in gs events u a lly ended fo r 89, th e result o f tw o h ou rs and tw en ty m in utes’ play. P a llett’s bow lin g was rem arkably effective. H e got seven o f the best A u stralian batsm en, and six o f th em , in clu d in g th e C aptain, w ere clean bow led. W arw ick sh ire m ade a w orse show w h en th eir tu rn cam e to bat, and in an h ou r and three quarters T u rn er and F erris dism issed the w h ole side fo r an aggregate o f 33 from the bat, o f w h ich 23 w ere con tribu ted b y M r. B ainbridge and Law . T h e w eather was brigh t an d ch eerfu l on th e second day, bu t th e w icket w as still v e ry difficult an d the gam e w as all in favou r of the A u stralians. L y o n s and Jones m ade a good start, pu ttin g on 50 runs for the first w icket. T h e form er h it w ith great freedom fo r his 34, and h is innings w as, under th e circum stances, a very good one. L a ter on, too, T u rn er and W alters stayed togeth er for som e tim e, and a useful stand by G regory and F erris enabled th e A ustralians to reach a very creditable total o f 132. Pallett, Shilton, and C ressw ell all had g o o d b ow lin g figures, and th e analysis o f th e last nam ed was especially noticeable. W arw ick sh ire at the close had 184 to w in, b u t th is w as quite b eyon d th eir pow ers, and som e free h ittin g by D ock er w as indeed th e on ly feature o f the innings. T u rn er an d F erris w ere again u n changed, and both h ad rem arkable figures. T h e form er’s, though, w ere th e better, and his tw elve w ickets w ere got at a cost o f on ly 34 runs. G loucestershire h ad th e advan tage of goin g in first on an excellent w icket, bu t fared bad ly at th e outset, fou r of th e best batsm en bein g ou t w ith the total on ly 58. M r. F ra n cis, how ever, played w ith confiden ce as w ell as ju d gm en t and stayed w h ile M r. C ranston scored. T h e tw o am ateurs, w ho w ere responsible for 134 o f the total o f 194, w ere together tw o hours and ten m in u tes, during w h ich tim e th ey increased th e total b y 113 runs. M r. C ranston ought to h ave been cau gh t w hen he had m ade 26, bu t otherw ise his 101 w as free from an yth in g like a m istake. W h en Y orksh ire w en t in U ly ett and L ee h it freely after H a ll’s retirem ent, and at th e end of th e first day th e score w as 65 w ith on ly one batsm an out. O n T u esd ay m orn in g U lyett and L ee w ere again in good form , and their partnership, w h ich lasted ju st under an h ou r and three-quarters, resulted in an add ition of 135 runs. B oth played w ell, bu t U ly ett’s w as th e better perform an ce. H e was batting three hours and tw en ty m in utes, and excep t fo r a hard chance at 45 there w as no fau lt in his 107. L a ter on B row n e and W h iteh ead m ade another stand, and th e pair put on 49 runs for th e ninth w icket. G loucestershire had to go in again on T u esd ay aftern oon 136 to th e bad, a n d w hen p la y ceased h ad lost fou r of th eir best batsm en for 118, of w h ich M r. R adcliffe h ad contribu ted 61 b y good free cricket. Y esterday M r. Francis played steadily and w ell, as in th e first innings, bu t th e other bats m e n did n ot offer any great resistance, and th e in n in gs closed for an addition o f 60 runs.
