K E N T . T h e M arylebone C lub opened its season at L o rd ’ s under som ew hat u nfavourable auspices at th e end of last w eek. R ain preven ted a com m en cem en t o f the above m atch u n til h alf- past one o ’clock on T h ursday, an d p la y was lim ited to an h ou r and three-quarters on the follow in g day from the sam e cause. Still, the gam e w as n ot w ith ou t interest, and the end b y n o m eans u n excitin g. M arylebone had a strong batting side, bu t th e bow lin g w as con ­ fined to C hatterton, B ean , and R ich ardson , th e tw o last o f w hom m ade th eir first appear­ ance as m em bers o f the ground staff at L ord ’s. M r. W . H . P atterson, M r. M . C . K em p , and G . G . H earne w ere absent from th e C ou nty, and in th eir places a trial w as given to M essrs. L . A . H am ilton, w h o has scored largely for th e U n ited S ervice; A . C . Y ou ng, o f R ochester; and J. H . A rbu th n ot, w h o played fo r K ent som e years, and is n ow at hom e from In d ia on b rief leave. T h e first-n am ed batted in very g o o d style. H e w as in altogeth er an h ou r and forty m in utes, and o n ly fell to a fine catch at p oin t after 45, th e result of really sound cricket. M r. M arch an t had m ean w h ile been p layin g the M arylebone b ow lin g w ith con fiden ce and freed om . H e h it all rou n d in h is best form , an d w h en he w as w ell taken at lon g-on he had on ly been in fifty-five m in utes, du rin g w h ich tim e he had m ade 66 runs. M r. F o x , w h o w ent in fourth w ick et dow n, saw th e rest o f th e side go, taking out his ba t fo r a m ost usefu l innings o f 38. M arylebone m ade a bad start w hen th eir turn cam e to bat, and at th e end of the first day four o f th e best batsm en, M essrs. Shuter, H ornby, K e y and L ord H aw ke, were ou t w ith on ly 53 runs up. F rid a y ’s play was ch iefly rem arkable for the partnership o f C hatterton and B ean. T h e tw o professionals w ere together an h ou r and a quarter, during w h ich tim e th ey added 71 runs. C h atterton ’s 46, though, w as th e better display. H e was batting altogether tw o hours and ten m inutes. Just after three o ’clock rain began to fall h eavily and the gam e had to bo postpon ed till the follow in g m orn in g, M .C .C . h a vin g scored 155 for seven w ickets. T h e grou n d w as so w et on Saturday th at a resum ption co u ld n ot be m ade till nearly one o ’clock, and w hen play d id begin the M arylebon e in n in gs w as soon finished, the last three w ickets fallin g fo r an add ition of 49 runs. K en t had thus an advan­ tage o f 13 runs on th e first hands, and another brillian t display o f battin g b y M r. M archant enabled th em to m ake a good show in th eir second innings. T h e K ent captain was, in fact, the h ero o f the m atch . O ut o f 116 m ade during his stay he accounted fo r no less than 81, and consider­ in g th e state o f the ground, it w as a perform ance of exception al m erit. H e w as on ly an hour and th irty-five m in utes m aking h is 88, and there w as on ly one m istake— a hard ch an ce to p oin t w hen he had scored 18. M .C .C . w ere left w ith 155 to w in , and w ith on ly an hour and a -h a lf there seem ed sm all chance th a t they w ou ld get near th e sum required. M essrs. H orn b y and Shuter, th ou gh , scored rem arkably fast, and a hun dred runs w ere m ade in the h our. Just as th e hun dred w as reached, th ou gh , M r. Shu ter w as splendidly caught by M r. M archant. H e had m ade 47 o f the num ber, and in h is hits w ere a six over the gran d stand and tw o fours in to th e sam e buildin g. C h atterton was b ow led w ithout scoring, and ju st as tim e w as up M r. H o rn b y w as w ell caught in th e lon g field. H is h ittin g w as noticeable fo r all its old vigou r, and w ith th e excep tion o f a ch an ce to lo n g -o n w hen he h ad m ade 64 there w as n o actual m istake in a b rillian t innings.
