T h e Sussex E leven opened th e present season in a very p rom isin g fash ion th is w eek w ith a m ost creditable victory over a strongish side o f M .C .C ., at L o r d ’s, on T u esd ay last. O w ing to th e h eavy rain of S un day, a co m m en cem en t w as n o t possible u n til 3.40 on M on day aftern oon, and w hen play did b egin th e bow lers w ere able to assert th eir m astery so com pletely that in tw o hours and a quarter an innings had been com pleted b y each side. M arylebone w ent in first, b u t w ith the excep tion o f M r. H orn b y , w h o h it m ost vigorou sly, and saw eigh t batsm en retire before he w as out, n o one cou ld m ake any show against th e b ow lin g o f Jesse H ide and B ea n . H id e in particu lar pu zzled th e M aryle bon e batsm en, and h is figures w ere quite excep tion al. In all h e g ot seven w ickets fo r 22 runs, fou r o f these w ere from successive b a lls— Flow ers and W rig h t cau gh t at m id-off, F o r d at short-leg, an d R u ssel cau gh t and bow led . Sussex fared even w orse, as in an hou r and ten m in utes th ey w ere all out, w ith ou t one double figure, M artin taking six w ickets, and A ttew ell four, each at a cost of 20 runs. T h e w ick et o n T u esday did n ot sh ow any m aterial im p rovem en t, and in an h ou r and forty m in u tes th e m atch w as over. M r. C. A . Sm ith, w h o m ade his first appear ance in an im portan t m atch sin ce his return from South A frica , bow led w ith great success, and of th e 36 scored b y M .C .O . in th e second in n in gs on ly sixteen w ere m ade from him , w h ile he took seven o f th e ten w ickets. T h o u g h Sussex at th e finish w an ted 53 to w in , th e presum ption jwas all against their success. T h orn ton . M r. W oods, th e U n iversity captain , had on ly three m em bers o f last year’s eleven to h elp h im in M essrs. G osling, M cG regor, and H ale, and the seven rem ain in g places w ere filled by new m en— five of the m ost prom isin g F resh m en , and tw o seniors, M essrs. C otterill and B eresford. H eavy rain h ad fallen on Sun day, but still th e w icket w as h ardly so m u ch affected as to accou n t for th e sm all scoring. M r. T h orn ton ’s eleven w ere th e first to bat, but on ly three o f them w ere able to get double figures, and th e side w ere all ou t fo r 68 M essrs. W ood s and the C arthu sian F resh m an , Streatfeild, divided th e ten w ickets equally, although th e form er had th e better figures, as w ill be seen. M r. M cG regor w as also in capital form , catch in g no less than fou r batsm en at th e w icket. T h e C am bridge eleven m ade a fairly good show w hen it cam e to th eir turn to bat. T h e in n in gs lasted tw o hours and a half, but th ou gh seven o f th e eleven g o t double figures, the aggregate w as on ly 130. M r. T h orn ton ’s eleven w ere in a m in ority o f 62 w h en they w ent in a second tim e, late on M onday aftern oon, and so bad ly d id th ey fare, that w hen stum ps w ere draw n six of th e best batsm en w ere ou t fo r on ly 29 runs. T h is u n expected collapse w as en tirely due to the very effective bow lin g of the U niversity captain. Mr. W ood s got all the six batsm en, and five of them w ere clean bow led . W h en the gam e w as re sum ed on T u esday m orn in g th e end seem ed very close, as M r. T h orn ton ’s eleven still w anted 33 ru n s to save an innings defeat, w ith only fo u r w ickets to fall. M r. V ern on , too, was caught alm ost im m ediately, b u t M r. Paravicini helped Mr. W ebbe to add 63 runs fo r the eigh th w icket, and their stand gave th e gam e renew ed interest. B oth batsm en played capital cricket, and M r. P aravicin i’s 44, it is w orth y of rem ark, w as th e h igh est score of th e m atch. T h e in n in gs w as rem arkable for th e extraordinary b ow lin g o f M r. W ood s. H e w as credited w ith all th e ten w ickets, a feat v ery rarely ch ron icled and as fa r as w e know , on ly recorded in an im p ortan t fixtu re to seven other cricketers o f recent years. C am bridge w anted at the end 72 to w in , bu t th e bow lin g of B riggs, M old and W rig h t w as too good to adm it of any liberties, and w hen the sixth w icket fell, th e total w as on ly 48. M r. J a ck son, the H arrow C aptain o f 1889, though, batted w ith great judgm ent, as he had in the first innings, and as M r.
