94 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. MAY 1, 18 90. S U R R E Y X I. v. E IG H T E E N OF K IN G S TON AND D IS T R IC T . W ith the praiseworthy object of assisting A rthnr Chester, a local cricketer, w ho did good service for the C ounty occasionally some years ago, the Surrey Eleven made their first appearance of the season on M onday last on the Fairfield Recreation Ground at K ingston. Mr. John Shuter, Mr. K ey and L ockw ood were absent, but, as will be seen, the Eleven were far m ore than a match for the E ighteen, and the gam e proved to be very one-sided. B rockw ell and C. M ills, who were so successful in South A frica during the winter, played for the Eighteen, but, as was only to be expectcd, they were not at home after the fast wickecs to which they have recently been accustom ed. T he Eighteen batted first, but w ith the exception of E . Powley, a young player who was engaged at the Oval, and who carried out his bat for an exceedingly creditable score of twenty, no one got double figures. Lohm ann and Beaumont were very successful w ith the ball, and the form er, who was on throughout the innings, got eight wickets at a cost of only 9 runs. W hen the eleven went in Maurice Read was in his m ost lively vein for batting, and his score of 92, which included ten fours, was an innings in his best form . A t the end of the first day the eleven had scored 223 for the loss o f only half their wickets, Lohm ann follow ing up his excellent perform ance w ith the ball w ith a good not-out soore of 45. The match came to an unexpectedly early conclusion on Tuesday. On resum ing, L oh mann and W ood were both dismissed without a run, but Beaum ont and Bowley, the tenth wicket, gave great trouble, and the innings ultimately reached the creditable total of 298. W anting 244 to save an innings’ defeat, the l©cal eighteen made a worse show in the second effort than in the first, and Lohmann and Bowley were unchanged. Strachan, indeed, was the only batsman able to offer anything like a resistance, and twelve of the team failed to score. Bow ley had an extra ordinary analysis, as will be seen. H is eight wickets only cost 3 runs. The eleven won by an innings and 212 runs. K ingston and D istrict . First Innings. Second Innings. R. J. Sivers, c W.
